I don't know if that game was the most disappointing to me. It did give me the false notion that all you need to do is just get in and it's a brand new season. All the 10-6, 9-7 type Wildcard seasons that followed killed that idea.
Mostly that is the 1 SB in the past 4 decades we had a clear shot of winning if we didn’t fold at the end of a NFCCG. We absolutely could have won that one.
Here are the standings if you remove scab games.
49ers 10-2 west winner
Bears 9-3 central winner
Redskins 8-4 east winner
Saints 10-2 wildcard
Vikings 8-4 wildcard
Broncos 8-3-1 best team in the AFC
The playoff seeds end up being the same, but based on those records, the Vikings look a bit better than the 8-7 record everyone remembers. The Vikings lost at home in the season finale to the Redskins in OT, so we were that close to being 9-3. Still impressive what they did against the Saints (44-10) and 49ers (36-24) in the playoffs. Bill Walsh said it was his worst game as a coach. I imagine Montana felt the same way xD. Steve Young came in and made the score closer than it was.
