So what do you do the day after you traded Kirk Cousins and look at your pathetic QB depth chart?
In terms of the QB position, I would expect a similar approach to 2014 where Rick/Zimmer kept a drafted QB from the prior regime (Ponder), brought-in a "bridge QB" (Cassel) and drafted a QB (Teddy)...so the drafted QB from the prior regime is Mond; the "bridge QB" can be Teddy/Mariota (insert your fav "bridge QB" in the $7m-$10m per season range) and whatever 2022 rookie QB they like (and no, it doesn't have to be Rd 1 or involve trading multiple future 1st Rd picks, something I knew you've stated you're firmly against).
While the QB1 position would most certainly take a step back in terms of on-field play in 2022, the extra cap space afforded by saving Kirk's $35m 2022 base salary could be used to shore up other roster holes...so when a QB does step up for them or they identify a QB in the future they like, they'll have the roster ready to go around that QB. The Vikings failed to provide Kirk an OL during his tenure and with his $45m cap hit in 2022, they wouldn't be able to bring in anyone else to help him in 2022, either.
Lastly, the team was/is spinning their wheels at or around the .500 mark under Kirk for the past 4 seasons. While Kirk himself isn't "pathetic", the QB depth chart behind him has been and Kirk isn't good enough to warrant the cap space devoted to him, or make up for the roster holes that went unplugged due to his contract.
Being totally honest if a GM came in and dumped Kirk in favor of a combination of Mond, Teddy and whoever I would immediately lose every ounce of respect for them. Kirk could certainly be improved upon but no serious GM is going to feel those two are a viable replacement.
