Alright yeah I've been thinking about this for a few weeks now, and as badly as I've wanted him gone 3 years ago already, there might be some benefit in letting him finish out the season if you squint hard enough, although there are some risks involved with that plan. So here are some of my thoughts.

PROS:
- it would be cathartic
- we get a jump on everyone else in our search for the next HC
- we'd be first on the minds of coordinators considering HCing jobs next year
- it would be over and we won't have to worry about 2022 being more of the same
- star players relieved
- we open it up and become more watchable

CONS:
- we no longer get to b*tch about him
- we risk the interim being decent enough the rest of the way and landing the job in 2022 a la Leslie
- if Spielman isn't fired too, he might get to stick around to pick a 3rd HC

Now the pros/cons of letting him finish the season ...

PROS:
- we get to keep b*tching
- we completely crash and burn making it a no doubter for even the hardcore apologists
- better chance of completely cleaning house on black Monday
- an interim doesn't get the chance to impress

CONS:
- we're robbed of the schadenfreude
- the pain continues
- we don't get a jump on new candidates
- star players become more frustrated

WORST CASE KILL ME NOW SCENARIO:
- he does just enough to squeak into the 7th seed at 8-9, or saves his job somehow

What have I missed? Help me fill in the blanks.

The only con is as you stated, the concern that the interim bum does well enough to keep the job.

The positives are everything * infinity!

There aren't many pros to firing him now. He smartly set up his coaching staff so there isn't a guy on the staff that would or could be considered his replacement. The only guy might be Patterson but that's a big might. Also this isn't considered a strong top heavy draft so firing him and hoping to lose out isn't a good option either. Might as well ride it out and pick around 16 once again.

Can't see any interim guy doing much since that guy will probably be Andre Patterson whose claim to fame is he developed one player, Danielle Hunter. God help them if they promote little Pubes to the job. But Patterson is nobody. Also he's a defensive guy and what this team needs is not more focus on defense, it needs to cut loose on the offensive side, stop playing scared and join the modern NFL. This isn't 1974 as some of us keep pointing out. So I doubt he gets any 2022 consideration beyond Rooney Rule consideration which is to say, "So tell us why you'd like the permanent gig. Ok thanks, we'll let you know."

And getting to b*tch about Zimmer is not a pro for me in any case. I do it but that doesn't mean if Mike is gone I somehow miss the chance to gripe. I'd be too ecstatic, frankly, to care any more about calling out Mike. We'd have to focus on Rick then. Rick seems to have adopted Denny Green's philosophy the last 5-6 years or so--all his first rounders (JJ and maybe Darrisaw excepted) are Dmitrius Underwood-style "bonus picks".

Also I don't think the risk with the interim is he gets the head job though with this ownership group you never know - "dumb" is their modus operandi so often. I think the risk is that the team gets a bump from being relieved of the fossilized dino head guy and plays better and bumps the record up, making the draft choice lower. And then if they don't can Spielman he turns that mid-first rounder into another can of sh*t like Gladney, Hughes, Treadwell, Waynes, Bradbury, etc.

I don't think "getting a head start on the HC Market" has ever helped the teams firing their guys mid-season... I'd have to do some research on it, but a lot of the best candidates are not going to be hired mid-season.

Good thread...As much as I want Zim gone 2 hours ago, realistically I know canning just him doesn't really do much right now and no different then end of year. Hes not back unless we somehow win the super bowl. It would need to be a full cleaning as in Zim and Rick to really make sense and even possibly Kirk getting traded (yes very long shot) Not sure how that would work with getting rid of Rick now who takes over or what. It would just be a sense of relief to us fans if he was gone today and give us something to look forward to. A big fear of mine would also be a interim on this staff somehow turning this thing around and stealing the job. I want a full cleanse and it should be today, not just Zim.

Yeah nobody is getting hired mid-season, but what I meant by that is, we get a head start on doing our homework, contacting agents, floating out interest, getting feedback etc. I don't know if the tampering rules cover coaches, but I'm guessing not, and that allows us to get a jump on schmoozing.

And from the perspective of any possible candidates, the Vikings are on their mind first (technically the Raiders) and longest. They get to put more thought and research into our organization until it's hiring season. Compared to the little time they'll get to think about any teams who wait until black Monday to make an opening.

Tanking plays no role in this exercise other than to hopefully avoid making us consider making the interim a permanent hire. It's about doing the least Viking thing about the inevitable end of the Zimmer era, or trying to minimize it anyway because somehow I know this organization is going to screw that up too lol. Like getting rid of Childress and ending up with Frazier.

And let's see some damn Rookies! Vigil has no future here, time to get a better look at Surratt and Dye. Bench Breeland so we can see Hand and Boyd. Cole needs a look at Center. Granted, he sucked in Zona but Players sometimes turn it around after the wake up call of being traded. And Davis needs looks, obviously.

Not a single thing I just mentioned will happen whilst Michael Zimmer remains the Head Coach.

I know this is all “what if”, but… I think we’re too soon to even theorize it might happen. By tomorrow, people will start talking about how close all our losses were, that we “should be” 5-2 or some nonsense, and we’re only half a game out of the 7th wildcard spot, etc…

If they’re 3-6 in two weeks - and I think that will be the case - the Packers game may be generating a lot of “must win” noise. ( And maybe the Pack will think, “Let’s help keep Mediocre Mike there” and take a game off as they did in week 7 last year…) But if GB beats us like a drum, the heat will rise… I still don’t think firing would be seriously considered before December.

Another consideration though: a mid season firing of Zimmer alone would essentially mean he is taking the blame alone. Very rare to see a GM fired before the offseason, so if you want a full housecleaning, wait.

I've wanted him out for a couple years now. I honestly don't really see a con to doing it sooner than later.

I'm wondering if Zim is fired now if Gary Kubiak would consider unretiring and comeback to finish this season as HC and I'm wondering if he retired in the first place because of Zims restrictions on the way the offense operates? could also get a look at the "real" Kubiak offense in action this way. Might as well give it a try since you are stuck with Kirk for 1 more year anyways

Plus Gary already knows the Vikings so it could work
