Okay I want to show the difference between a good defense vs elite defense.. People toss around elite like it grows on trees. Elite to me is a elite defense people remember for all time regardless of it's your team or not.. Purple People Eaters, 4 Horseman, Steel Curtain, Legion of Boom, 85 Bears etc etc.. If people outside your fan based don't remember them as elite chances are they wasn't. So I want to compare a elite historic Ravens 2000 Defense vs a good defense Vikings 2017.. Screw the PPF grades raw you not scoring and when it mattered most shutting everything down in the playoffs with a sorry QB to boot.
2017 Vikings Defense: 1 shutout, 4 games with 7 points or less total allowed, 6 games of 20 or more points allowed including playoffs
Playoff scores: 29-24 W Saints, 7-38 L Eagles.. Good defense because when it mattered most folded 62 points scored against in the playoffs two games. Played good defense 2 quarters got exposed the other 6. Again good defense but was figured out and nobody outside the fan base remembers it. Needed to ball out in playoffs to enter elite all time doorstep IMO. 2017 is remembered for the Minneapolis Miracle though..
2000 Ravens Defense: 4 shutouts, 11 games with 7 points or less total allowed, 3 games of 20 or more points allowed including playoffs. Given up 10.3 points a game all year.
Playoff scores: 21-3 W Broncos, 24-10 W Titans, 16-3 W Raiders, Super Bowl 34-7 W Giants. This with going 12-4 and playing all but game one on the road.. 23 total points given up all playoffs with a weak QB. We gave up more points in a Miracle win then they did in 4 games of the playoffs..
So no way we can be in the same breath as them.. A true elite defense, our defense was good in 2017 but not elite.. This is what I mean by elite and everybody who witnessed this Ravens team remembers how dominate they were all over not just Ravens fans. Zim has generated a few good defenses, and I mean a few in 8 years never elite.. Because elite is synonyms with Historic for me.. Even 3rd down rate can be overrated if teams getting big plays on 1st and 2nd down, but scores and points allowed is a absolute stat. When the stakes were high playoffs Ravens went into operation shut down mode and that's real. They didn't use the excuse we have Trent Dilfer our offense sucks. They took matters in their own hands and gave up 2 damn touchdowns all playoffs and Super Bowl. Just one example between good and elite(great). Our 2017 Defense ain't in nobody top 10 all time, not even top 20 and that's real. Nobody remembers it.. Not total Defense, but people I know remember the Williams Wall historic run stopping greatness. If I ask them about 2017 they remember Keenum and the out the blue great season he had and the Miracle play between him and Diggs. 2017 was the year of Case Keenum for us, regardless he will always have my love for playing way above his ability and given us a memory season. 2017 is most know as the Case Keenum year for us. Ask people outside of Minnesota and not Vikings fans I ain't lying. The defense is not what they remember compared to what Case did as a journeyman out the blue. So in retrospect he saved Zim after that throw and bought him time after a bad 2018. We were done his defense terminated in the 2nd half.. On the sideline finished and Keshum and Digsy came through boy was that glorious.
