Pierce ‘getting better all the time’
Michael Pierce was slow to start camp because of a calf injury. He’s now starting to ramp things back up and has been impressive during back-to-back practices in one-on-ones and the 11-on-11s that he’s taking.
“He’s getting better all the time as far as where he’s at,” Zimmer said. “We’re starting to increase his workload a little bit each day. He’s doing good, doing a good job. Him and Watts are both doing a good job. And James Lynch is doing a good job in there. All three of those guys have been very solid.”
Pierce, who ranked as the NFL’s fourth best run stuffer by PFF in 2018, signed prior to the 2020 season but elected to sit out last year due to COVID concerns, so this is Zimmer’s first time getting a look at him up front.
“He’s a big, powerful man that does a great job not letting the center get off,” Zimmer said. “He’s good at pushing the pocket. He showed some really good quickness on one of the rushes the other day. I know Andre is very excited about it.”
Pierce has had some impressive one-on-one reps against center Garrett Bradbury. Zimmer said that will help the third-year center prepare for the beasts of the NFC North.
“It’s a good battle,” Zimmer said. “Garrett is going to have to face some bigger guys. Not too much bigger than 350 or whatever [Pierce] is.”

Danielle Hunter has new tools?
During what was possibly Hill’s first podium session of his career, the veteran tackle talked about going against Danielle Hunter again in practice. Since arriving in 2016, Hill has seen plenty of Hunter lining up over him at right tackle. This year, Hunter’s been switching to rush over the left tackle from time to time. Hill has been impressed with how Hunter looks coming off neck surgery.
“Danielle is going to be a (force to) reckon with this year,” Hill said. “It’s good to have him back though. Him going from right to left, he’s telling me he wants to get on the left side to work that side better because he’s always been on the right. So he told me he came on this side to get better. I love going against Danielle every day.”
Hill continued to say that he’s seeing things from Hunter that he hasn’t seen before.
“He’s stronger, to my knowledge. He looks a little bigger. He’s got some moves that I’ve never seen on the left before. I see them on the right all the time but on the left, I was like, ‘Hey man, that’s something. That might work on that.’ He’s got a couple new tools in his box and he’s looking good.”
