I called for Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman's head this year. I've been furious with Spiel's apparent half ass 20-year plan to fix the offensive line, mind-boggling decision to extend Kirk Cousin and a dozen more moves I completely hated in the past few years. And for Zimmer to miss the playoffs with Dalvin Cook, Justin Jefferson, and Adam Thielen, plus other talents is inexcusable.
That being said, Rick Spielman completely shut me up. I can't think of one offseason move that I didn't love. He finally got us a top tier Tackle in the draft, signed a perfect DT in Tomlinson (eliminating the need to waste our 1st round pick on yet another bust-DTs in first round are the most iffy position from what i've seen) and i love the boldness of the Patrick Peterson move, and i am confident he'll have a Charles Woodson-like resurgence.
While I thank Riley Reiff for his service, Christian Darresaw is cheaper with a higher ceiling. Mike Hughes has been a complete bust and i was petrified they'd keep putting him out there to justify his 1st round status and continue to give up every single 3rd down thrown his way.
And then Kellen Mond is the cherry on top. A great non-committal pick as a 3rd rounder who may very well give the Vikings a reason to stop giving Kirk Cousins unearned friggin' contract extensions!!!!
The last time I remember an offseason from free agency thru draft to acquire all of our areas of need across the board, not extending players who don't deserve it, and dropping the dead weight was maybe 2009, the Favre/Percy/McKinnie year?
I think Rick Spielman totally nailed this offseason and is off probation. It's all on Mike Zimmer now. On paper, he has a playoff team. If the Vikings don't win 10 games this year, I put it all on Zimmer and he'll need to be fired. (Even if Kirk falters its up to the HC to keep him respectable.)
