Parise and Suter both bought out.
Parise has been a negative ice guy for a few years now - even if many fans didn't know it. He did not play two ways well, and he wanted top line ice time.
Suter told coaches who he should pair with - even if not the best for the team. He could be positive in the locker room or negative, and the Wild did not want drama when his ice time would have been reduced next season as he was placed on a lower pairing.
The Wild will take three years of huge cap hits, but they are not more than they would have if Parise and Suter had remained with the team. It is obvious that the Wild want to fill holes with young players in those seasons, so the cap will be manageable. If the Wild make a trade for a costly veteran, that may make it difficult, as would Kaprizov's and Fiala's contracts.
The Wild will likely offer Kaprizov the stars, but Fiala is reported to want more than the Wild are willing to give for a long term contract.
Next up ... the NHL expansion draft.
