I don't like the shootout, but I get it. Ties are sort of sucky in any sport.
Small rinks lead to boring center ice trapping instead of open play. Getting rid of the two line pass was one of the best things the NHL ever did, but having larger ice would open play for the superstars.
What I would like to see is all games being worth three points. Three points for a win, two points for overtime/shootout winner, one point for an overtime/shootout loss. Both teams lose a point by not winning in regulation - which can be big in a tight playoff race. No more bonus points for making it into the overtime. Why should a regular game be worth two points and an overtime game be worth three?
If you have read my posts on the former hockey board, you would know I dislike fighting in the NHL, and the penalties should be more sever for dropping the gloves. I understand the enforcer mentality, and teams can still do that if need be, but it should be much less common.
If someone takes a run at a superstar player, there will always be repercussions. It doesn't always have to be fighting.
Teams need some tough hard nose players, but they have to be able to skate too. There is no room for goons.
