The Vikings signed Cousins as the final piece to make them a Super Bowl contender. Unfortunately, the defense regressed and the offensive line has never been good enough to compete with elite defenses. Now the Vikings are rebuilding their defense, and they still have a weak offensive line. Cousins is good, but he is not good enough to contend with a weak line or even a good defense.
The conventional wisdom is the Vikings need help at Tackle, Guard, and Defensive End. Because neither the offense or the defense will be great in 2021, the Vikings are not likely to contend. So why keep paying Cousins big money when his contract makes it hard to build an elite defense and an offensive line that can protect him against elite defenses on 3rd down?
What if an alternative presents itself in the draft? What if a QB falls far enough to take in the 2nd or 3rd round? What if this QB could be like Russel Wilson? Is this possible?
What if Kellen Mond is this QB?Phil Chris Simms ranks him as the 4th best QB, and Simms' judgement about QBs is quite good. But Mond may not get drafted until the 2nd or 3rd round. Does it make sense for the Vikings to try to get Mond if they see him as a future franchise QB? If Simms is right, his ceiling is higher than Cousins, and in a few years the Vikings can build a contender and compete for a Super Bowl with Mond.
If Mond falls, I'd like to see the Vikings draft him. And if Simms is right, taking Mond in the 1st round would be a good decision.
Here is why:
4. Kellen Mond, Texas A&M
Simms: "Why is nobody talking about this guy? He lost one game in the SEC, threw 19 touchdowns and three interceptions. That merits more talk and hype. But forget that -- his throwing is special. Wilson is the king of the throwing. Jones is extremely consistent. Kellen Mond is the next guy. As pure throwers, guys who can throw perfect strikes every time, Wilson, Jones and Mond are more machines than Trevor Lawrence is at this point. Mond has a really quick release, he keeps the ball up tight. I wish he would relax and loosen up, but that's the way they're taught in college at times. Every throw he makes is bullseye. It's a rocket arm. He doesn't need space in the pocket. He can throw with pressure. The only negative is I wish he'd play a little bit more backyard football. He's a really good athlete, but I think he's trying to do the right thing in the Jimbo Fisher system and go through the reads, and he's a great decision maker, he can go 1 to 2 to 3 seamlessly, he makes very little mistakes, when people aren't open he doesn't compound those mistakes...
