Since the year 2000, there have been 21 SBs, and 81% have been won by teams with QBs who are in the HOF or will be one day. That is an overwhelming majority of SBs won by teams who have something we do not have on the roster, and that we likely won't have on the roster until at least 2023. It isn't a secret why this is. Having a great QB not only keeps you in the playoff hunt every year, increasing your chances of getting to the SB by helping the team win in the regular season, they also play huge roles in almost every playoff run that leads to winning it all. Either with clutch comebacks or dominating performances that leave the opposition unable to keep up.
This post isn't about those QBs though, this is about the exceptions to the great QB rule that Vikings fans need to hope for if they want to win it all.
I compiled some numbers below looking at the 7 (it is really 5 but I am leaving in Eli because I am sure people will argue Kirk is as good) SB teams that won it all with a QB of Cousins' caliber or worse. Peyton Manning was not as good as Kirk is in 2015, so he gets in here too.
Note: I do not have a good way of ranking the 2000 and 2002 Olines so they are not included in the averages
3 of the 7 won it all with elite defenses, the Eagles won with an all around elite team...and then we have Eli and Flacco. Actually, then we have Eli in 2011. That 2011 NYG team had no business winning it all and the only thing they did well was rush the passer. I am not a big conspiracy theorist, but those numbers scream that season was fixed by the NFL. They make no sense. None. The worst Oline in the NFL, terrible rushing team, terrible scoring defense, terrible run defense, but they win the SB?
Even with that season skewing the averages, it is pretty clear that as much as people want to go after the Vikings for neglecting the Oline and focusing on defense in free agency, defense and to a lesser extent running the ball well is the way you win it all with a less than ideal QB. Get after the QB, take away the other team's ability to run and the gap between what you have and what the future HOF QB on the other side of the field shrinks and gives you a chance to win it all.
