After the draft, I wrote a fair amount about trading Cousins after 2021 because his contract will prevent us from keeping and signing other talent. Looking back, you can win the Super Bowl with a great defense and a QB who does not choke.
If the Vikings' defense turns out to be great, and if the O-line can pass protect on 3rd down against top defenses, and if Cousins, Cook, Thielen, and Jefferson are healthy, the Vikings can beat good teams in the playoffs. But all those "ifs" are unlikely.
But if this dream scenario somehow came true and the Vikings found themselves in the NFC Championship game in 2022, could they win with Cousins? Yes, because they would not be depending on him to carry the team. He can make plays when given the opportunity. He just won't extend plays like Mahomes. Could Cousins win a Super Bowl game against Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, or Tannehill? If the Vikings defense is great and he has time on 3rd down, yes, it is possible.
But the win would be a team win, and I would favor keeping the team together over keeping Cousins in 2022.
The other huge factor in winning a Super Bowl is coaching. Can Zimmer and his coaches develop winning game plans against teams with great players and great coaches? Maybe.
As a Viking fan for 50+ years, I'd like to see the Vikings get there. As Gretzky said, You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.
