I'd say he's too hands on. The fact that they're near the top of the league in terms of frequency of runs on 2nd and short and 2nd and long is all Zimmer.
My belief is that Zimmy forces his offensive coordinators to adopt a run-first mentality. No matter what. No matter the modern NFL rules favor pass-first. No matter we have two all-Pro level WRs (before and after Diggs). No matter that we have a $150mil fully gtd (for all practical purposes) franchise QB. All that be damned..... Zimmy wants to run-first to keep his defense fresh, and that's it. Deal with it (as an OC). Because after all "defense wins championships" I'm sure Zimmy would remind you. And if you don't cave to his demand of run-first offense..... then he will sabotage ur pass-first offense during practice intentionally and force you to do it. Basically literally, as you're then unable to prepare during practice for a pass first offense.
So that's part one. That is how Zimmy is definitely hands-on with the offensive philosophy.
Part two is..... get this, at the same time, he is hands-off.... in the sense that he makes his demand for run-first (or else sabotages it)...... but hands-off in the sense that beyond that (coaching technique on offense, offensive meetings, offensive play calling,, etc) he does not interfere on the offensive end.
So there you have it funky.... it is possible to be both.... and Zimmy has completely failed at it on so many levels.
