Zimmer will crush the first time OC. Its gonna get ugly for the young fella.
Yes, Klint Kubiak will be crushed just like the other first time OC, Kevin Stefanski was!
My belief is that Zimmy forces his offensive coordinators to adopt a run-first mentality. No matter what.
So how did DeFilippo get away with a pass-first scheme for so long, then? Zimmer clearly didn't force him to do anything starting out, it wasn't until the pass-first scheme was failing in the NE/SEA games when Zimmer demanded they run the ball more.
Part two is..... get this, at the same time, he is hands-off.... in the sense that he makes his demand for run-first (or else sabotages it)...... but hands-off in the sense that beyond that (coaching technique on offense, offensive meetings, offensive play calling,, etc) he does not interfere on the offensive end.
I don't agree with this, but I think there's a more elegant way to answer the question. Zimmer hired OCs who jelled with his plan - Gary Kubiak loves to run the ball and everyone knows it, so he was promoted because Zimmer liked him a lot. Stefanski liked to run too. Norv was also a run first OC.
Basically: Zimmer likes to defer the offensive gameplan to the OC, and typically hires OCs who like to run the ball. There is no mandate that forces the OC to run the ball at a certain ratio, but they will be naturally inclined to run the ball more often than other teams. This explains most everything that's happened since 2014.
