Or in other words, the realistic one. This is what I think could happen, but I am nervous that even these FAs are pie in the sky.
Cuts
Reiff
Bailey
Rudolph
Stephen
Colquitt
Jalyn Holmes
Restructures/Extensions
Smith 4 years/40 million: 5/10/12/13
Barr 3 years/24 million: 6/8/10
O’Neil 5 years/52 million: 6/8/12/12/14
Vikings Re-Signed
Hill 1 year – 2 million
Odenigbo Original tender - 2.3 million
Boone 1 year – 1 million
Davis 1 year – 1 million
At this point the Vikings have 11 million in cap to spend on free agents (after paying rookies). They also only have 19 million next season.
Free Agent Signings
Everson Griffen 1 year - 3.5 million
Kevin Zeitler 3 years – 4/8/9
Tashaun Gipson 2 years – 4/8
I am hoping Weatherly was just an insurance signing and would be cut if the Vikings could sign Griffen for that much. If that is the case, give his 2 million to Malcom Butler on a 1 year deal.
Draft
I am by no means a draft expert and most of my draft takes are stolen from someone else. I am also only going 4 rounds deep because the rest of the draft is typically pretty meaningless.
1st Round
Kwite Paye DE Michigan
All around good DE who gets after the QB and is great against the run.
3rd Round #1
Marvin Wilson DT Florida St
He had an awful 2020 due to some weird injury, but if he had played like he did in 2018 and 2019 we are likely talking about picking him at 14 not 78. Big upside with this guy and the Vikings really need to start taking some chances.
3rd Round #2
Teven Jenkins OT OK State.
Knocks on him are that he doesn’t have the longest arms and tends to not “sink his butt at the line of scrimmage”. His athleticism fits our zone blocking scheme though and he could switch over to the right side if the Vikings move O’Neil to the left
4th Round #1
Trill Williams CB Syracuse
He has the size Zimmer wants in a CB. Sounds like he isn’t great in man coverage but has been very good out of the slot.
4th Round #2
Amari Rodgers WR Clemson
A WR who could replace what Beebe gave us (easily) and much more. Would excel here with JJ and Theilen taking attention away from him and allowing him to work in space.
4th Round #3
Donovan Stiner S Florida
He is a safety. We need a safety.
4th Round #4
Kendrick Green OG Illinois
He has the flexibility to play guard or center at the next level. We have big question at RG and Center.
New Depth Chart
Offense
QB Cousins/Some scrub taken in the 6th round
RB Cook/Mattison/Boone
FB Ham
LT O’Neil/Jenkins
LG Zeitler/Green
C Bradbury
RG Cleveland/Samia
RT Hill/Udoh/Green
WR1 Theilen/Johnson
WR2 JJ
WR3 Rodgers
TE Smith/Conklin
Defense
CB1 Danztler/Boyd
CB2 Butler/Gladney
CB3 Hughes/Trill Williams
RDE Paye/Griffen/Odenigbo
NT Pierce/Watts?
DT Wilson or Watts/Griffen/Lynch
LDE Hunter/Wonnum
SS Smith/Metellus
FS Gipson/Stiner
SLB Barr/Blake Lynh
MLB Kendricks/Nickerson
WLB Davis/Connelly
I think the Oline has the possibility to be average if O’Neil transitions to LT well, but we did get worse at RT with this plan. Better on the interior though. A little better. On defense the Dline is much better than last season with the addition of Hunter alone. Pierce and Griffen would be solid additions as well and if Wilson could be that 1st round prospect he was in 2019, that would be a great Dline. Secondary is still not going to be good.
Overall the team above is a borderline playoff team and probably significantly better than last season if everything goes right. Not a SB contender but a team that could win 10 games.
