— Should his performance in Carolina be a red flag? Not necessarily. In the previous two seasons with Minnesota, he managed 6.0 sacks and had a 9.2% pressure rate. To put that in context, there were only four edge rushers with pressure rates above 9.0% last year. Of course, Weatherly’s pressures came largely in a situational role where he was sometimes rushing over the guard on third downs while opponents were forced to deal with Everson Griffen and Danielle Hunter. That’s a pretty favorable situation.
This isn't true. Weatherly never managed more than a 5.9 % pressure rate in MN.
When looking at the numbers, he was actually very mediocre when he was here, which surprised me a bit, because going into the 2019 season, there was a big push that Weatherly could easily replace Griffen and we could free up some cap space by cutting Griff.
Pressure percentage by year:
2017:5.0
2018:5.1
2019:5.9
That is pretty pedestrian for an edge rusher and while that 5.9 would have been good for 2nd on the Vikings behind the situational pass rusher Hercules Matafa who had a 6.4 % pass rush percentage (this includes Ngakoue), it would have made him the 32nd most productive pass rusher in the NFL last year. 47th in 2019 when they actually called holding.
