170 | Tyree Gillespie | S | Missouri |
220 | Olaijah Griffen | CB | USC |
238 | Tammorian Terry | WR | Florida State |
The Players:
KWITY PAYE: He's a dynamic player with a ton of potential and physical ability.High ceiling prospect who has improved every year and shows elite athletic abilities and good football IQ.
Paye has won in the past from tight alignments and utilized his powerful hands and functional strength to diminish angles and find creases to find the football.
His development should only continue under Vikings coach Andre Patterson and give the Vikings two playmakers off the edge.
ALIJAH VERA-TUCKER: There's no way Vera-Tucker should be on the board here, but he is and I want him,so definitely worth the move up.
An athletic easy mover with good body control and balance in his pass sets, very capable of handling bull rushes and equally adept as both a pass and run blocker.
Fits the Vikings scheme well and is a day 1 plug and play LG who also has experience at LT.
MARVIN WILSON: Wilson started the 2020 season at Florida State as a highly rated first round NFL prospect, and ended it as a fringe 2nd/mid 3rd round prospect.
I really liked Wilson coming in to 2020,but his play leveled out to the point where some scouts see him as nothing more than a rotational guy. I would be happy for the Vikings to select him here and see if Andre Patterson can get him back to the level he was at the conclusion of 2019. If he can, then the 3 Tech position is solved for the next 5 years at least. If he can't,then I was wrong and the Vikings just spent a 3rd pick on a rotational DT.
JACKSON CARMAN: This guy is a road grader in the run game, but is still able to hold his own as a pass blocker. He played LT for Clemson but may be better suited at Guard in the NFL. My plan would be to give Carman and Vera-Tucker reps at both positions on the left side of the line in training camp and see how it plays out. The Vikings need to get better on the OL and find long term solutions.
JAMES WIGGINS: Wiggins was a gun for the Bearcats in 2018 with 4 ints,3 of which ended games. He suffered a torn ACL two days before the 2019 season, and then after rehabbing his knee in just 5 months,he tore his meniscus in the same knee tripping down a flight of stairs. He had surgery and recovered in 9 weeks.
He is a fantastic athlete who plays a very physical style of football and can play a variety of roles, but still has some issues with technique to clean up.
DAZZ NEWSOME: Newsome played all 4 seasons as a slot receiver for the Tar Heels and also returned punts.
He's a good route runner with excellent separation quickness, ball skills and great hands, who excels at creating yards after the catch.
Newsome needs to develop his route tree and functional strength but could definitely be a capable WR 3 with the possibility to be WR 2 if he can improve his game.
SHAKA TONEY: To be honest,I'm not even sure this guy fits the Zimmer scheme as he plays a wide 9 end and has had great success doing it with his fantastic first step quickness and ability to quickly dip his inside shoulder and win with quickness.
He's probably more of a rotational type edge player who can cause a ton of problems for opposing defenses on obvious passing downs.
I believe that when you draft take the best players presented to you and let the coaches figure out a role for them. Explosive pass rushers are hard to find.
TYREE GILLESPIE: The Vikings need a ton of help at the Safety position.Gillespie is probably more of a rotational/backup player, but maybe our new DB coach can improve him to something more than that.
One thing Gillespie can do from day 1 is improve the play on special teams,as he is a gun on coverage units.
OLAIJAH GRIFFIN: He's limited to being an outside only corner and has had injury issues, but I love his competitiveness and toughness to win every down.
TAMORRIAN TERRY: He's 6'4",has big play ability and averaged 58 yards per reception on his 9 TDs in 2019.He's elite winning 50/50 balls and with his size and physicality can be a nightmare for outside corners.
The Vikings need a big bodied red zone target,so they should strongly consider Tamorrian Terry.
SOME NOTES:
With the trades,I was willing to trade down at 14 to try and leverage a 2nd round pick, but didn't find a suitable trade offer so made my pick with the hope of trying to gain a 2nd rounder after the conclusion of round 1.
However, the Bills came knocking when they were up at 30,and with Vera-Tucker on the board I was happy to swing a deal.
The Bills came calling again in round 3,and with the way the board was unfolding good OL prospects were running low,so once again I was comfortable doing the deal without giving up a whole lot.
My whole draft philosophy is to always draft as many players as possible in the top 100. I know not every one agrees with that, but I am yet to see anyone put up a solid argument against it.
