It isn't "just cut him". It is cut him, save 45 million in cap over 2 seasons and build around a rookie QB.
That is a plan to build towards winning a SB, sticking with Cousins because the alternative might be worse is not.
Ricky has no track record of acquiring the franchise qb we need and he's been at it for 10 years. His head coach pretty much hates the offense and actively tries to sabotage it at times. Not to mention the constant, unspoken assumption in all the endless boring Cousins Money discussions, that genius Ricky just needs more cap space and somehow voila, Super Bowl Homeboy! Genius Ricky is the guy who let Kirk's agent take him to the cleaners twice already. Mo' money is not what Ricky needs, he needs to be shown the door.
This plan sounds terrific... yessir, just cut him! It's gonna make the annual message board awarding of the July Lombardi trophy to the purple a bit awkward, however.
I guess in a way I should be for such a move since it might accelerate the badly needed departure of Rick and Mike. A really big, splashy and utterly stupid move is what we need! Go Rick! Just cut him!
If the Vikings don't do something now with Kirk, they are paying him 45 million in 2022, which means you either cut the cord now, or lock in a QB 31 GMs don't consider the answer at QB for 2 more seasons, at which point you either continue down this path of perpetual mediocrity or start over with far less than you would have had if you dumped him now.
As for what to do once Kirk is gone, the top 2 QBs in this draft are probably unattainable, but the next 3 all could be had for the right price. If that right price is too high or if the Vikings don't like those 3, than you take your chances on one of the castoff QBs that will be available, similar to what TN did with Tannehill, and try again in 2022 where we will have more assets to build a championship team.
Guaranteed mediocrity or possible greatness. That is the decision that the Vikings are faced with this off season, and you can either be terrified of going into a season without Kirk Cousins as your QB, or you can hope for better.
