Some details on Big Ben's new restructured contract: link
According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network it sounds like Roethlisberger took a $5 million pay cut in 2021 and thus will pocket $14 million this season instead of $19 million. It also sounds like Roerghlisberger added four voidable years to his deal so that all but $1.075 million of the $14 million he’s now due in 2021 can be prorated out.
Assuming these details from Pelissero are correct, the new contract signed by Roethlisberger will result in his cap number dropping $15.34 million in total.
Roethlisberger was essentially given a signing bonus of $12.925 million. In totality, it sounds like Roethlisberger’s contract has become a one-year, $14 million deal as his voidable years are just that. The Steelers stand to have $10.34 million in dead money if 2021 is Roethlisberger’s final season.
We are now waiting to see the voidable language on Roethlisberger’s new contract as it relates to dates and such because the June 1 rule might could play into this next offseason to help lessen the immediate dead money hit in 2022.
Comments off the top of my head:
- $10m-$15m in 2021 cap savings will help them keep 1 or 2 of the free agents they want to bring back (Ju-Ju, Depree Hilton, Feiler, Villanueva, Sutton). I'm keeping an eye-on which one's they can't (ie, Feiler and Sutton are the two I'm most interested in).
- Big Ben and Cousins are at different spots of their careers: Cousins has time left to play whereas Big Ben is right at the end of his career...but you have to wonder Rick sees this type of restructure (ie, using voidable years) as something he could do for Kirk's contract to free-up immediate cap dollars in 2021 and push those dollars into future years where the cap goes back to normal knowing the TV deals are near completion.
- If Big Ben's deal is a 1-yr, $14m deal, they could very much still be in-play for a QB in the 1st Rd of the 2021 Draft. So if Mac Jones or Trey Lance are there at #14, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Pittsburgh could trade up with Minnesota to grab a QB to be Big Ben's replacement for 2022+.
