If the SF offer is legit, then the Vikings must absolutely accept it.
Getting out of Cousins contract is imperative with the salary cap numbers being reduced because of the loss of revenue due to Covid.
Currently,Cousins cap hits of $31M (2021) and $45M (2022) take up 17.2% and 19.8% of the respective years cap.
However, the 2022 percentage assumes a cap number of $227.5M and it is highly likely that number is lower. There were several reports last year that owners wanted to spread the losses from 2020 over 4 years, and if that's the case then the 2022 cap number may well be closer to $200M.In that case,Cousins cap percentage will be closer to 23% and that is absolutely untenable.
The Vikings are in a crucial off season and the roster lacks depth and needs considerable work if the team is to get back to a competitive level anytime soon. For this to occur,Rick Spielman needs as much cap space as possible in 2021 and beyond,as players like Brian O'Neill,Irv Smith and Harrison Smith are all coming off contract in the next 2 years. Then off course we have the Elephant in the room of Danielle Hunter wanting a significant raise.
