Running RPO isn't being innovative, any more than running the wildcat is.
Referring to the 2018 offense, that was 22nd in the NFL in scoring efficiency after being top 10 the year prior. The offense ran the ball more in 2019, scored A LOT more, and won more games after implementing Zimmer's "archaic" ideas on offense.
Apparently the 2018 offense was good now. Who knew?
And yet… Zimmer was boiling.
To him, this was not how you won in the NFL. All this passing.
Out of that night’s 25-20 loss on national TV, the head coach issued a public mandate that the Vikings needed to run the ball more. Just like that, everyone knew the Vikings were going to run, promptly shut down the run, the offensive coordinator was fired and — in Week 17, against the Bears’ B team, at home, a playoff spot on the line — the Vikings produced 10 points and 164 yards. Says one of the many ex-assistants to cycle through this staff: “That tells you everything you need to know about what the players think of Zim. Right there. That game.”
What you quote above is pure opinion and a quote from a staffer who was fired.
Do you think Zimmer coached the QB to throw inaccurate passes on route to being 16 for 31, 122 yards, 1 int 1 pick and a 58 passer rating in that Bears game? He threw the ball a lot, why wasn't our offense good?
Do you think the offense was better in 2018 with Cousins throwing a lot, or in 2019 and 2020 with a heavier run attack? Which season did we win more games? Which seasons did we score more?
Deluded fans who think a garbage offense in 2018 is something we should aspire too over the good offense we had in 2019. Unbelievable. We need to take the ball out of hand of our best player and put it in the hands of a QB who has proven he is not good enough to carry a team to victories on his own. Great theory.
