Honestly my aspirations go a little higher.
If we do get a new GM what I want from them or more importantly from the ownership is a blueprint for the team they want to build.
For instance we need to build a team identity and build off that. For instance in the 70’s we had the purple eaters. Tough defense. Tark on offense. A great blueprint.
The niners had an identity during their dynasty. As did the Steelers. The Packers.
For decades we have floundered going from a high power offense to a run dominated offense and back and forth. It’s time to decide who the hell we are as a team and then it’s easier to sift through the talent pool for players and coaches to bring in the people who fit the mold.
Until we do that we are like a ship without a rudder. Drifting aimlessly from one scheme to another and constantly behind the 8 ball trying to fit talent to different schemes.
Anyway that’s my rant.
You get talent first and coach to your talent. If you don't end up with talent, you end up fired like Zimmer is going to be because Spielman didn't land talent.
You can't be the Purple People Eaters or the Steel Curtain if Danielle Hunter is the only decent defensive player drafted in the last 7 years. NO MATTER WHAT YOUR BLUEPRINT IS.
Well that’s obvious but it’s also a bit myopic. Within any range of available talent you have a range of skill sets and if you only select talent based on raw skills you will never have a cohesive roster. It does no good to draft a smaller, quicker guard who excels at pulling and blocking laterally if the rest of your OL are big and excel at power rushing. There are a lot of factors involved and while I agree that you want to adjust to your talent you also want your talent to compliment each other.
