The whole Culpepper/Brees situation dealt with a bunch of shoulder doctors and the Dolphins went with Dante because most if not all of the doctors felt Dante had the better chance of recovery % yada yada yada. This was sometime 2006. Brees wanted a chit load of money I think and that also played a part.

If you want to blame someone from the Dolphins for not getting Drew Brees blame Wannstedt. He had a chance to draft Brees in the 2001 draft but choose to draft Jamar Fletcher. Marino just retired and Jay Fieldler was the starter.

Ok your right..But im also right he drafted Christian Ponder, panic bought SAM BRADFORD for a 1st round pick, and extended a veteran QB for a Wild card victory. Sorry if I dont have the highest hopes for "Slick Rick" to draft our future QB

I'm wrong more times than I'm right on here, but the facts are there for everyone to see, as the GM of the Vikings Ricky has failed to build a SB team. The Wilfs just might give Ricky one more shot at drafting that elusive young, very good 10/12 year QB that this team sorely needs. This upcoming draft has a few young guns that might be that guy. You can only hope it turns out like the Laquon Treadwell/Justin Jefferson gig where he whiffs on a player one draft and hits it out of the park the next. Only this time it's not a WR it's the QB.

QB1-Cheap vet like Dalton or Fitzpatrick or another journeyman QB

QB2-Lance or Fields

QB3-Stanley/Browning with 1 or both on the PS

If we are going lance or fields then maybe bring in a guy like Marcus Mariota to be the bridge QB because then our #1 and #2 QB's would be mobile QBs so we wouldn't have to change the offense too much if the rookie had to play.

I agree. Right now we're getting journeyman results at a premium price.
I don't know what would happen with Kirk if he was looking over his shoulder. I don't know he could change. He's only going to be as good as the team around him. If he's here next year it probably won't be good. Things go bad he knows he's gone. Does he fight for a job he knows ain't his? My guess he packs up the tent and saves it for the next suckers.

I just find it hard to believe that there isn’t a clause in any contract that states that anyone cannot be released and payout not given. I’m sure there some sort of buyout in such a contract, but it just doesn’t make sense to me otherwise..

I guess you do, because I was talking about our current GM when he was in Miami, they signed Culpepper over Brees. I dont think we had a real shot at Brees but I dont remember

I was high on Drew Brees going into the 2001 draft. I thought he was a steal going in the second round. He played well in San Diego, but the Chargers drafted Phillip Rivers in 2004, and Brees tore his labrum in the Chargers’ last game of the 2005 season.

A little history here. I wanted the Vikings to draft Aaron Rodgers in the 2005 draft despite Daunte Culpepper having a career season. I noted at the time how Culpepper was dependent on Randy Moss to get him out of trouble and could not go through his progressions. Culpepper ran the ball too often, and he fumbled games away. As we know, the Vikings passed on Rodgers twice, and now he passes on them twice a year.

As predicted, Culpepper was awful without Moss in 2005. When Culpepper was injured, I had hoped the Vikings would sign Brees in the offseason. I was often chanting, "Gotta get Brees!" on my message board posts. The Vikings had started Brad Johnson, but he didn't look great, and Brees was going to be a free agent coming from a bad situation in San Diego. Marty Shottenheimer had gone the run first route with Tomlinson, and Brees was playing out his contract with Rivers waiting in the wings. Then came the injury.

Brees was a free agent, but his labrum injury scared many teams from even considering him. The Vikings, coming off a season with an injured Culpepper, must have had pretty high reservations about bringing in another injured player. My thoughts at the time were, "If he passes the physical, sign him as the starter." Alas, the Vikings had missed on Rodgers and would pass up Brees as well.

As far as Miami goes, they traded for Culpepper after taking a look at Brees, but there are conflicting reports about how that went down. Nick Saben, the head coach for the Dolphins at the time, said they tried to sign Brees but he didn't pass the physical. Other sources, includimg Brees himself, have stated that the Dolphins only offered an incentive based contract while the Saints offered a starter contract with better guarantees, and he would be named the starter from day one. Randy Mueller was the Dolphins GM at the time, and he had been the GM in New Orleans previously which is where Drew Brees ended up.
