Just how bad have they been? After their final game in 1995 before moving to Baltimore, the Browns had the 3rd best franchise record in the NFL at 421-270-13 (.607), just behind Oakland (.614) and Miami (.612), and just ahead of 4th place Dallas (.606). Well both Oakland and Miami had a mediocre 3 years while the Browns were gone, so the Browns moved into 1st place without having played a game lol. In fact they took over 1st place on the final game of their absence in 1998 when Miami lost it's season finale. So the Browns 2.0 era began at the top.
It was short lived however as the Browns lost their season opener in 1999 on Sunday night in Pittsburgh handing the top spot back over to Miami. And it's been all downhill since. They were down to 4th place by the end of 1999 already, after going 2-14. They're still above .500 as a franchise however at 509-475-13 (.517) but they now only have the 15th best franchise record. And where did the Browns 90 percentage points go during that time? Well they've gone straight over to the Patriots who have gone from 22nd (.464) to 5th (.554) since 2001.
And in depressing news, Dallas is now the #1 team at .572, followed by the Pukers at .568 and the Bears at .564. But come on, lets be honest, how many now scrub defunct teams have the Pukers and Bores beat up from the 20's thru the 50's to pad that record? A lot. The Bores went 90-17-14 vs defunct teams and the Pukers 78-18-8. Can you say asterisk?
The Vikings are currently 9th at .543 and we didn't need to beat any scrub defunct teams to get there. We were has high as 4th late in 2009 when we just briefly passed the Pukers. We fell back behind when Favre lost that Sunday night game at Arizona when E.J. Henderson broke is leg. And ofc the Frazier era really took it's toll on our rank and win percent. Our win percentage peaked out in 1978 at .590, which was 7th best at the time. Not too shabby when you consider we were 27 games below .500 as late as 1968. Well if you want to get technical, we peaked out in 1961 at 1.000 when we beat the Bears in our first game ever as an expansion team xD. That's been our 1 and only week at #1.
