PURPLE PAIN ACCOUNTABILITY CONTEST
Introduction
Every year, we have people making bold predictions and assertions regarding the Vikings, the draft, the other NFCN teams, and the NFL as a whole. With this thread - and PPA threads, in general - we're going to put people to the test! We're going to keep track of said bold predictions/assertions, so we can look back on them. So many of them get lost in various threads - never to be found again, only spoken of/referred to - so put yours here! Also, if some are seen in various threads around the board, feel free to quote and copy/paste them here, as well!
We've taken inspiration from Skor North's "Write That Down" segment, in which weekly predictions are made and preserved for the future. It can be a blast going back many years and recalling some brilliant, some bad, and some off-the-wall predictions. We think having a centralized hub for storing predictions will not only be great to look back on, but we can also make an annual competition out of it.
We have a Google Sheet set up to check on our current predictions. You can access it here.
Prizes
There are two prizes up for grabs. The first prize is the Batting Title. The user with the best batting average (accuracy of predictions) will win this prize. The second prize is the Slugging Champion. The user with the best slugging percentage will win. Slugging Percentage is determined by a combination of the riskiest predictions coming true. 2021 Update: The slugging prize will now be determined by total 'risky' predictions hit. "Singles" will no longer count towards the final total for that category.
Important: To be eligible to win either of these prizes, you must make at least 20 predictions that will resolve by the end of February 2021. The limit of predictions you may make is 45. However, you are free to make predictions that will come true further into the future. Those will not impact the current year's competition.
The two prizes will be cash prizes of $25 each. If a user wins both titles, the second prize will go to the user who finished in second for the slugging title.
2022 ADDITION: Our podcast partners - Vikings Report - are also throwing in a Vikings t-shirt and a guest appearance on Vikings Report with Drew & Ted for the winners!
The prizes will be awarded in the final week of February, when all of the regular season and post season predictions have come to pass. All stats will reset for the next season of PPA after that.
--- Rules ---
Predictions that are hard to quantify / have questionable criteria will need to be amended or thrown out. I will contact the user to discuss this.
When not specified, your prediction will be assumed to be made about the current season. If you predict "the Vikings will win the NFC North", you won't get credit if they win it later on unless you specifically say so.
You can feel free to make predictions whenever you wish. This is not a weekly competition like our Pick 6 Contest, so you are free to stop by whenever and post predictions whenever they come to mind, as long as you do not surpass the maximum number of predictions.
Predictions will be initially judged at the time of when it was made. I will determine the likelihood of the prediction based on what factors I deem fit. If a user deems a rating inaccurate, they may challenge it before it has come to pass. I will reach out to Funkytown and possibly the mod team for a ruling. (For those thinking it may be possible that I slant the probability of ratings in my favor, I say this - as the head of the PPA contest, I am not eligible to win either of the prizes and if I do win one of them, the second-place winner will receive the award in my stead.)
You may make parlays (multi-part predictions) that will yield bigger hits. Specify if you would like your prediction to be broken up into several parts or not.
You will not receive credit on predictions that are deemed too safe. For example, predicting that the Vikings will not finish 0-16 will not count as a hit as it is too simple of a prediction. As a general rule, there should be less than a 70% chance of your prediction coming true.
Predictions may not be rescinded once they are made, though you may be granted a grace period if there was a mistake in the prediction within 24 hours of it being made. But once you've made the prediction and clarified it, there's no going back on that!
Statements and predictions may be moved from the other parts of the forums to this contest. The user(s) in question will be notified, and will be given a grace period to remove/modify the prediction if they wish.
2021 additions:
A user may not make predictions that directly contradict another of their own as to ensure that they will get one correct no matter what. Users may hedge on their past predictions (the Vikings will draft player X at pick #14, and then later predict they will pick player Y at pick #14), but this is only allowed if this does not guarantee one correct pick at the cost of another.
Predictions from non-PPA threads will be pulled into the contest. Saying a statement like "the Vikings will score at least 30+ points today" could be directly input into the contest. These may be challenged, but it is up to Danchat whether the prediction will hold or not, depending on the intent of the original post.
2024 addendum: Prize amount has been updated.
Additional rules may be added if necessary.
