Spielman was so high on him that he drafted Laquon Treadwell in the first round the very next Spring. On a side note, Diggs has never been selected to the Pro Bowl, but he did receive the award as the player that other players least likely wanted to have date their sister.
Receiver was a clear need because the GM wasn't very good at his job. Laquon Treadwell was not the answer. Two of the top three receivers on my board were still available when the Vikings made the Treadwell selection. Drafting Michael Thomas would have made Spielman look a lot better.
Also, if you're going to use Pro Bowl berths as a metric, then you have to admit that Barr was a good pick, as he's been to 4 Pro Bowls! (Don't use Pro Bowl berths to judge how well players have played. Xavier Rhodes went to the Pro Bowl last year!)
I do not have to admit anything, but Pro Bowls and All Pro are metrics. I thought both the Barr pick and Rhodes pick were good picks at the time, but I thought Mosley was a better NFL prospect because he could cover receivers in college. Barr could have been a great player at DE or on the edge in a 3-4. I'd put the selection of Eric Kendricks in the second round in 2015 as one of Spielman's better moves.
Rhodes had number one starter NFL skills. I wonder how much coaching versus injuries has messed up his game more. Zimmer put Rhodes on an island against the number one receiver without deep help too often, and that broke Rhodes down. Spielman did draft Waynes in the first round and selected Alexander in the second, so the Vikings should have been able to give Rhodes a breather; it did not work out that way.
I didn't see Waynes as anything spectacular when the Vikings drafted him, but I believe in strong cover corners on defense, so I was fine with the Vikings going that way. That is, until I saw how Waynes covered on the field. And Alexander ... he was drafted far higher than I would have drafted him if I would have even taken a chance on his ball-finching skills. If a cornerback has trouble with out routes and has problems keeping up with tight ends and backs, he isn't going to get far in the NFL.
Look at all of that draft revenue wasted on three players that all left the Vikings this offseason. Do all GM's do that and get new contracts? Yeah, those guys were all likely overpaid, but Spielman was ready for that ... or was he?
I liked Carr better than Bridgewater, but I liked them both better than Bortles and Manziel. I stated at the time that Bortles looked too much like Ponder at times, and Manziel did not have what it takes to be an NFL quarterback. If the NFL rumors are true, Spielman would have taken Manziel if the Browns had not moved up to take him. Spielman dodged a bullet like the Matrix Agent he is dressed to be.
