Rick has made three great moves to fix our QB position. Two failed due to exploding knees. The third has made me very happy and looks like the final long term fix.
Honorable mention: signing Case to a cheap backup QB contract for that one season where we REALLY wound up benefiting from strong play from a backup QB. That just never happens!
KC trading up to #10 in the 2017 draft to pick Mahomes.
Baltimore taking a shot on a guy after trading back into the first and drafting Jackson.
Seattle taking a shot on a QB too short to play NFL football in the 3rd round of the 2012 draft after spending a ton on Flynn in free agency.
This one is going to make me sick, GB drafting Rodgers in the first despite already having a HOF QB. Oh no, here it comes...
Those are great moves that have resulted in SB wins and/or MVP seasons from the QB.
Now lets look at Rick's "great" moves at QB.
#1 Traded up into the back of the first after failing to get his guy Manzel and getting a good rookie year and a better if not really productive sophomore year from a guy who's knee exploded and never played meaningful snaps for the Vikings again.
#2 Traded a 1st round pick and 11 million in cap Link to the team that would use those assets to help build a team capable of destroying the Vikings the following year on route to the SB. That traded netted them a bottom 10 offense, 7 wins, and 0 playoff appearances before a guy with a known injury history got injured.
#3 Paid a QB elite money to take a 13 win team to 8-7-1 and 10-6 in his first two seasons. Then extended him in a year where the odds are stacked against him repeating what he did in 2019, let alone actually have the top 5 season he is being paid to have.
3 SB wins, multiple MVP seasons for that first group of great QB moves. 1 playoff win, 0 seasons approaching MVP for that second set of "great" moves. Oh, and one of those great moves helped the team that beat us in the NFCCG.
None of the moves Spielman has made at QB have worked out. We are still hoping for the last one he made to get us that championship, but the first two were complete disasters. One through no fault of his own, but the second was inevitable. I also have a sinking feeling we will be regretting the extension on the 3rd "great" decision before it even kicks in in 2021.
