He was a starter, but, unless his fans were right about realizing the potential he still has not realized, he was heading toward backupville or starting on a crap team. I don't doubt he will get a starting job again, but I question how long he'll keep it. There are a lot of desperate teams out but he already turned down one. I think he thinks a contender will want him to start, and I think he's wrong. They might have, if he had put in a full season instead of choosing to remain a backup. With only 5 full games under his belt, his knee durability is still not a settled question.
He will get an offer to start, but will he take it? If he doesn't that will seriously harm his chances of ever starting again. He will be Snowflake Ted. He'll be nearly 29 before he gets his next chance, and while not out of the question that's starting to get a bit late for second chances at a long starting career. But he'll get a starting offer from another crap team next year, not from SB contenders.
I should have disagreed with your previous posted premise that subbing for Brees was any different than any other backup role. He was still just a backup, knowing that Brees would be back, and that the entire weight of the season was not solely on his shoulders. He was auditioning under pretty safe conditions. It was a pretty typical backup situation under which some good backups can thrive, which he did. And I've always said Teddy is a top-notch backup. I'd rather have him than Mannion or Shaun Hill, that's for sure, but I'd rather have 32 root canals than have him as our #1 starter.
