The starting QB vs. backup QB argument we all know too well as Minnesota Vikings fans. Everybody loves the backup quarterback!

Do we need Cousins if we hope for the playoffs? How many more wins per season do you think he gets us/plays a significant role in getting? What would our team look like without him - with this roster, schedule, coaching staff, and COVID-19 offseason? Any hope at all?

How Minnesota Vikings could still win without Kirk Cousins by Nik Edlund

Hopefully it won’t happen, but the Minnesota Vikings could still win if Kirk Cousins ever suffers an elongated, serious injury.

Various media outlets and fans on social media often say if quarterback Kirk Cousins gets hurt and is lost for the season, then the Minnesota Vikings are basically finished. The team that beat Minnesota Vikings in the playoffs last season, the San Francisco 49ers, suffered a similar fate in 2018 when they lost quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a season-ending ACL tear early that year.

The Niners subsequently went 4-12, and some rightfully wonder if Cousins were to suffer a similar injury this season, could the Vikings be in danger of a similar fate.

While that could be true, one player doesn’t make up an entire team.

The Vikings have more stars than just Cousins. On offense, they have explosive running back Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen at wide receiver and a couple of solid tight ends in Kyle Rudolph and Irv Smith. Defensively they have stars at every level, with Danielle Hunter, Eric Kendricks, Harrison Smtih and Anthony Harris shining the brightest.

The Vikings also have a coaching staff whose job it is to make adjustments to the game plan when certain players go down with an injury. While a Cousins season-ending injury would definitely be catastrophic, the team still has enough talent to win without him.

Here are some ways the Vikings could still win without Kirk Cousins under center during the 2020 season.

We would go back to an offense resembling 2012. Try to hide the QB as much as possible and hope Dalvin Cook matches AP’s 2000 yard season. I don’t see that strategy working out well, as it leaves our young Z-Fense exposed. They’re also going to need some help staying off the field.

I’d give Kirk anywhere from a 2-5 win swing in his favor playing a full 16 game season. I can see them winning anywhere from 7-10 games with this current roster as it stands on this day, May 22nd, and 16 games of Kirk. With a full 16 games of Stanley or Browning? 5 wins max.

That is pretty much how we have to win games in the playoffs with Cousins or against teams in the regular seasons with winning records. Not sure I see a difference.

Without knowing who gets injured, not really. It would be out of the norm for a Zimmer team to not be close to .500. I think this team on paper is more talented than the 2014 team he coached to a 7-9 record.

Well, if we're going to use the 49ers as an example, for the long run it would be better to go 4-12 and get some high draft picks to power a Super Bowl run, like they did. I just don't think Sean Mannion would hold up at all, Stanley was barely a draftable prospect, and Browning was reportedly not good in practice and barely got any reps last preseason. They'd need to add a legitimate backup if they wanted to remain a competitive team if Cousins got hurt.

With Sean Mannion and a lack of a decent backup we would be in trouble. I see 5 games won max if Cousins got hurt in the preseason. I feel about 10 max with him this season so a 5 game swing.

yeah, that's where it gets hard... I agree there. 2018 didn't really didn't present us with the best options, and given the situation, I get needing to act. I don't think Keenum was the answer, and I wouldn't have hitched myself to the Teddy bandwagon. I was leaning Bradford on a make good deal, but I wouldn't paid him what he signed for in AZ... That means I'm probably looking for a guy like McCarron on a prove it deal while drafting a rookie to develop under him...

I suppose in that situation Jackson would have fallen to us... of course I wasn't personally that high on him, for much the reasons that Reignman didn't like him (run first QB)... and we'd have been wrong (assuming we could have developed him in the same way Baltimore did)... which means a lot of draft capital would have been traded for Rosen (which was definitely wrong)... So yeah, 2018 sucked... I just know that adding time to Cousin's deal kicks this can down the road. I've been on record, FYI, for saying that I'd have punted on this season and traded everyone I could before the deadline for picks in this draft... We might (key word) have had enough capital to move up and get a decent QB between the extra losses and extra capital... only time will tell if that would have worked.

I agree that the 2018 wasn't the best options. Lamar played well but will he last? I thought Cousins was our best option the first time, but am skeptical with another 3yr guaranteed commitment without a out option. I really liked Teddy but not sure we could of waited so long for him? Next year I think we need to package some picks move up and get a long term guy behind Cousins regardless of how well he plays this year and be proactive.
