This may shed some light on why Bud never got us an SB. My thesis statement is: Bud simply didn't possess the commitment necessary to win a title in the most competitive league in the world, the NFL.
Facts/Opinions:
1. Fact: Bud often made statement to the affect of, I never lost sleep over losses, even the SB losses. Football is just a game. The sun will rise tomorrow.
2. Fact: In the "Alan Page; It's a Football Life" documentary, Bud actually told Page he could skip training camp because football wasn't as important as his education.
3. Fact: Always took pride in the fact that he would not subordinate his hunting, fishing and family time to football. Again, football is just a game.
4. Fact: Viking training camps were always the last to start and they were known throughout the NFL as being one of the softest camps in the league.
5. Opinion: He never showed any fire or intensity at any time.
6. Fact: Closely related to 3, but he publicly proclaimed that he wasn't a film junky and wouldn't live in his office.
These may be noble attributes for a guy/gal in an occupation not responsible for winning. But Bud was responsible for bringing us a winner. I don't care about Page's law career nor do I care about Bud's fishing or his family. Couldn't care less. I wanted a SB. Does anyone remember Shula, Knoll, Madden, Landry, Lombardi popping off about their cavalier approaches to coaching?
