From the deepest depths of the internet, I stumbled across this article and was surprised at how well this guy nailed his picks:
bleacherreport.com/articles/2704527-2017-nfl-draft-who-are-this-years-biggest-sleepers
This guy was picking sleepers, late day 2 and 3 picks, and surprisingly, he found 8 3rd-UDFAs who would have made for a great draft:
Phillip Walker - UDFA He hasn't had a great career, but you 19 out of 20 drafts you aren't finding anything better late in the draft. He is set to be the #2 in Carolina following a great season in the XFL where he outplayed guys who were drafted.
Marlon Mack - 4th round I love Cook, but Mack in the 4th and Dion Dawkins in 2nd instead of Cook is better than just Cook.
Will Holden - 5th round This is a big whiff, but not as big of a whiff as Willie Beavers. At least this guy has started a few games and is still in the NFL.
Chase Roullier - 6th round Redskins full time starting center since 2018. Great value here.
Grover Stewart - 4th round Started last season for the Colts, but nothing special. It is still great value for a 4th rounder
Vince Biegel - 4th round Bounced around the NFL until he ended up in Miami last year, starting 10 games. Solid value for a 4th round pick. Not for the Packers who drafted him, but still an eventual good depth guy.
Shaguill Griffen - 3rd round Good starting corner for Seattle. Great value.
Xavier Woods - 6th round Starting safety for the Cowboys since 2018. Fantastic value.
Comparing that to Rick's 2017 draft:
Bradford - 1st round Worst statistical starting QB since he entered the league, only started 2 games for the Vikings after the 2017 draft
Cook - 2nd round 1 great season so far after a promising start to his career was cut short in 2017
Elflein - 3rd round One good season as a center, but this guy identified a 6th round center who was much better
Jaleel Johnson - 4th round Has done nothing but be depth
Ben Gedeon - 4th round Good depth guy, 1 year starter and solid value here
Rodney Adams - 5th round Terrible pick
Danny Isidora - 5th round Good depth on the line, solid value
Bucky Hodges - 6th round Terrible pick
Stacey Coley - 7th round Terrible pick
Odenigbo - 7th round Great value here for a 7th round, but bounced around the NFL before coming back to the Vikings and showing something in relief in his 3rd season
Lee- 7th round Who?
Tocho- 7th round Who?
3 starters after the 3rd round + 1 in the third compared to 1 starter found in the 2nd, one in the 3rd. Plus Stewart and Biegel are solid depth guys who have had better careers than any other guy drafted by the Vikings that year not named Cook or Elf.
This is a sports writer beating a GM paid millions and supported by a massive staff. Beating him without the benefit of a 1st or 2nd round pick.
