PROS: While his pass rushing skill set is lacking, there are times when he cues up a single move and executes with great effort to finish at the quarterback. With 22 career sacks, Lynch is Baylor’s all-time leader in sacks. Generally plays with a motor that consistently runs hot and he makes his share of plays simply because of effort. Baylor’s coaching staff raves about him.
CONS: He just doesn’t present many challenges for offensive linemen when forecasting him to the NFL level. Not a dynamic athlete, doesn’t have great length, functional strength is lacking, technique is not developed and he’s stiff. Has to improve his hand usage and do a better job of playing with extension so that he control better at the point and unhinge. Counters are generally absent on tape. Anchor is fairly soft and his contact balance disappoints. There are reps where he just gets tossed and clearly struggles to fight pressure with pressure and anchor. Processing skills are lacking and he is often manipulated out of his gap. Pass rush plan is generally to shoot straight up the field as a speed rusher which he doesn’t have anywhere near the juice needed for that to be effective in the NFL - this leads to easy scramble opportunities for quarterbacks because he vacates his rush lane. On other occasions, Lynch gets velcroed on blockers because he attacks body to body and doesn’t establish a half man relationship.
BEST TRAIT - Production
WORST TRAIT - Athleticism
RED FLAGS - None
Nobody in the history of Baylor football logged more career sacks than James Lynch who holds the program record with 22. A hard charging defensive linemen, Baylor’s coaching staff speaks highly of Lynch. While there are plenty of splashy plays found in Lynch’s film, forecasting him to the NFL level doesn’t generate much excitement for me. His athletic profile, physical traits, functional strength, processing skills and technique leaves much to be desired. There’s not much present in his game tape that suggests he will present difficult challenges for NFL offensive linemen. Lynch’s football character and motor will give him a chance, but there’s a lot he needs to improve upon to contribute on Sundays and the foundational skills to build upon are lacking.
