Well well well, look who it is. Long time AGAIN stranger haha. To be fair to the Ravens and Eagles, I wish the Vikings would utilize that strategy once in awhile. Seems like that's what all the cool teams are doing these days to win a Super Bowl.
Meanwhile the Vikings keep plodding along to Mediocreville with their bandaid approach. They do just enough each offseason to keep us competitive, but not great. We need to drive this short bus off a cliff every once in awhile so we can properly reload with quality young talent and take advantage of those rookie contracts. Worked for the Chefs this time around, but when it comes time to start paying everyone, Mahomes especially, fun time will be over.
I prefer our strategy but Spielman simply isn't a good enough talent evaluater / team builder to make it work. For example, we spent picks #25, #11, #30 and #54 on CB's and now we have no CB's. That's 3 first rounders and a 2nd. If you let an average fan make those picks they might have done better! That same year we spent #25 on rhodes he spent #29 on Patterson lol. He spent #12 on Ponder, he drafted Teddy #32 overall despite not even remotely being a match for Norv Turners Air Coryell down field passing offense.
There really isn't a "method" that gets you to the superbowl with any kind of consistency when you draft like that, ignore the O-line for 5 years, and aren't on the same page as your offensive and defensive coordinators. Even Frazier has gone on to run an elite Bills defense once he got out from under Spielman and I thought his defense was literally WORTHLESS.
What's the strength of our team? Do we want to play defense and run the ball or not? Kind of odd to have all our money tied up in a QB, WR, WR, and a TE (well now we traded Diggs at least) when the head coach keeps saying he wants to run the ball more!
I'm a strong believer in drafting a young QB and taking advantage of that rookie deal to basically spend on other areas of the team, the chiefs did that with Mahomes, the Seahawks won the superbowl with Wilson on a rookie deal, the steelers won with Ben, the Ravens with Flacco, over paid him and IMMEDIATELY regressed. Pretty much every team that over pays a QB, even elite QB's, has a hard time getting back to the superbowl, hell, even Rodgers hasn't been back. Brady always gave the pats a nice discount, same with Brees and it's not surprising those two teams were pretty much always competitive.
I'm a strong believer that over paying for a QB that is average or slightly above average (whatever you want to call cousins) is a quick way to handicap your team and destroy your chances at a superbowl.
Guess which route Spielman went? It'll take a miracle to win anything like this!
That's exactly why I initially was against the idea of getting Kirk Cousins, it was a willful overpay because we felt we were a QB away.
Now, I'm pretty much ready for a new GM and QB, if the GM wants to keep Zimmer, I'm willing to consider it.
