The initial signing of Kirk was a bad move which set us back (and ultimately caused us to rebuild this year) and the extension is just as bad.

From my understanding, it becomes fully guaranteed 3 days into the 2021 league year, but if the Vikings cut or trade him prior to that, they have a 41 million dead cap hit.

Did we just essentially give Cousins a fully guaranteed contract again?

What is the benefit to the team of structuring it like that? Is this really just all about making the contract look like it is not fully guaranteed to average fans, so that it is more palatable to them? That is insane if true. What a cluster.

Yup! We screwed possibly. If we trade or cut him after this year 40 mil dead money. He would bag like 60 some mil for 1 year, but after the 3rd day after next year that 45 come to roster in 2022. If we extend him before that 3rd year hit we will be paying a 35 ok QB for like ever. Rick screwed us on purpose, I believe cause he knows hes likely fired. Hope it works out doubt it. I hope we signed someone at least when I get off just terrible he did us no favors we are stuck with no out. Its ridiculous!

that's why i wasn't too upset over him getting an extension. We are basically locked in for two seasons with a easy way out in 2022. And now we are loaded with draft picks to build the team for whoever takes over then

don't kid yourself mike.... we are not taking a $10mil dead cap hit to get rid of a guy we just gave a record fully gtd $84mil contract followed by this lucrative extension..... Rick VERY CLEARLY loves Kirk......

I don't actually know how it could ever be just 10 million in 2022. The contract says it is "fully guaranteed if he is on the roster on the 3rd day of the league year in 2021". To me that reads on the 4th day of the league year, if he is on the team, he is owed 45 million no matter what in 2022.

The only bright spot is, that if he has another Alex Smith like year, a team might be willing to give up a 2nd round pick for him after the 2020 season (since we will be eating most of his guaranteed cap hit), and then we get a 2nd round pick for 41 million in dead cap. Yay!
