Intimating that Zimmer is to blame for Trade Waynes never being able to make a play on the ball is unfair. Ball skills are something you have or you don't. Zimmer could coach him 24/7/365, it's not going to make him any more likely to knock down a ball whizzing past his ear hole.
It is a shame too, because he has all the tools, is an excellent tackler, plays with good technique, but without being able to make a play on the ball will never be a #1 CB, at least in Zimmer's system where man coverage is used so much. Waynes would be much better served in a zone heavy scheme
However, it is a known fact Zim doesn't teach his cb's to play the ball so he his partially responsible for Waynes development, or lack there of.
Mike Zimmer talking about Trae Waynes before last season and becoming an "elite corner":
"He’s been doing a really good job, getting better with a lot of things he’s doing,’’ Zimmer said of Waynes. “I think the next progression because he’s close a lot of times, when the ball’s there, and the other guy makes a play. So when he gets to the point where he can continue to knock the ball out or intercept the football, that would be taking the next step to being an elite corner.’’
So, he recognizes the need to play the ball, but doesn't coach it? Waynes just needs to learn it himself damn it!
