Maybe someone can shed some light on this....
Zimmer has been adamant that we HAVE to run the ball to succeed, so we draft and sign lineman whose biggest attributes are their ability to run-block, even though they failed miserably at it against the 49ers. But for the most part, they're good at getting to the 2nd level on runs.
Here's the problem, you have a QB who can NOT function at all under pressure, and can't slide 2 steps to the side, up, or back when a rusher gets into the backfield to save his life. How are we supposed to succeed with a line that can't pass protect at all against the better lines?
The bottom line, I think both Zimmer and Spielman put WAY too much faith in Kubiak's system thinking it could overcome the deficiencies of the players if they simply took guys who they thought were the perfect fit. And now, we're stuck with sub-par protection for a QB with the yips.
And you can't overhaul your entire offensive line in a single season, the best we can hope for in a cap-hell offseason is 1 or 2 upgrades at most.
Although I'm not usually a negative Nancy when it comes to the Vikes, their rationale on the line just irks the piss out of me when I sit and think about it. I get that you want to "run the damn ball", but if you can't freaking pass protect for a QB who needs borderline perfect protection to succeed..... you're utterly screwed!
My Pollyanna post for the day...
