ESPN blocking stats - confirming the OL troubles, but also highlighting the DL as a primary problem?
I know that sounds odd, but bear with me. ESPN created a couple of statistics for the guys in the trenches - the Pass Block Win Rate (PBWR) and Pass Rush Win Rate (PRWR). You can read about them here, but the idea is that they can track the players and figure out who was blocking whom, whether there were double-teams, how long they were able to hold/beat the block, etc. The cutoff is 2.5 seconds. If a blocker can hold the rusher for that long, he wins. If not, the rusher wins.
I can't find a place where they make all of this public, but it apparently is available to ESPN reporters so we can glean a few things from various articles. First is a quick statement on our underwhelming rookie Center:
Seth Walder - ESPN Analytics
The players with the worst pass block win rate at each OL position among qualifiers. T: J'Marcus Webb, Dolphins G: Evan Boehm, Dolphins C: Garrett Bradbury, Vikings PBWR = how often a player sustains his blocks for at least 2.5s. It's an ESPN metric that uses NGS data.
There is a regular season recap that is also enlightening:
www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/27584726/nfl-pass-blocking-pass-rushing-rankings-2019-pbwr-prwr-leaderboard
The Vikings have no names on either the pass rush or pass blocking win rate top-10 by position (no Hunter or O'Neill).
The team block win rate for the Vikings is 57%, placing us 23rd in the league. Not a shocker there.
However, the team pass rush win rate is only 37%, which is good for 26th(!) in the league. This is surprising for a team with the 5th most sacks and it is hard to reconcile the difference. Maybe the stat is crap, but it matches up with PFF's take that the interior DL created the fewest pressures and that Everson tailed off at the end of the year (only 1 sack and 5 tackles after Week 12).
One immediate question that pops up is - if the stat is accurate, does that indicate that the secondary wasn't the main problem on defense? In fact, if the defense was getting a lot of sacks without winning at the line, does that mean that the secondary was doing its job and many of those are coverage sacks?
