Talking Points
This was a very gutsy performance by the team, which were playing most of their 2nd string players. Some of the 2nd string players and units performed better than our first string offensive & defensive units. This will be elaborated on later in my discussion and analysis. Coaching, game plans and play calling was much better this week on both sides of the ball. This was a game the second units could have won against a very good tough top caliber defensive team.
Units & players that played better today than the players & units in the first Bears game & last weeks big game against the Packers.
The offensive line as a whole. As I mentioned in my last weeks, No Spin analysis post, we needed to get bigger and stronger on the O-line and that we should start some of the backup players as Elfin, Klein & Reiff had played their way out of a job & needed to be benched. After watching closely today, I would include Bradberry to the list. I thought Hill played well at LT, I thought our G,C,G play today was a drastic improvement as far as being able to handle their man and not get pushed backward into the pocket on running and passing plays. As the same Boone from last weeks pathetic line play ran for 148 yards today. He actual had some room and holes to run through. Collins at LG and Samina at RG played aggressive and kept pushing the pile of the RB when he looked stopped but obtained several yards after the extra effort by them today. I thought Dozier was a night and day improvement from neutralizing his DT and not being pushed back into pocket are letting his man run by him for a sack as we are used to seeing with Bradberry week to week in pass protection. I know this sounds crazy, but my eye ball test tells me this is what we are going to need in a bigger stronger O-line that can neutralize the strength of better D-lines in the playoffs. I would start next week in the playoffs RT Hill RG Collins C Dozier LG Samina LT O'Neil
CB
Holton Hill had an excellent game, played tight coverage all day and tackled very well. He is playing way better than Rhodes.
I would start Hill & Hughes at CB and rotate Waynes Alexander & Rhodes at nickel and dime as needed, I would try to get Kearse in the mix as he has been playng very well.
Some of the other players that played well today
Offensive
RB Boone
WR Hollis
TE Smith
OT Udoh
K Bailey
Defensive
LB Wilson
LB Smith
S Kearse
DT Obenigbo
DE Weatherly
Does the Vikings coaching staff have the insight to make major changes on the 0-line to get bigger, stronger or are they going to continue to play the same 3 dwarfs at C G C and watch them get pushed around against good defenses. First Bears game, last Packers game. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting different results. They should also start Holtin Hill at CB, he is much better than Rhodes right now especially in pass coverage. Will the vikings make these drastic changes and give their team the best chance to win or continue with the same inept play At G, C,G and recently Reiff at RT. CB Rhodes Time will tell.
Feel free to opine but remember to keep it pithy!
