It's really easy to see why you wouldn't want to pay Cook when you compare him to Christian McCaffrey. My cousin did the analysis on it and sadly I didn't take notes, it might already be in this thread somewhere, if anyone can help me out with the stats that'd be awesome but the jist of it is compare how many games Cook has missed to McCaffrey, and then realize McCaffrey plays something like 92% of the snaps for the Panthers. I haven't looked but I believe Cook is more like 55-60% with Mattison / Boone / whoever responsible for the rest, if anyone has those numbers feel free to correct me.
In my mind, since Cook is missing games and only playing half the snaps or so anyway, it's just not worth it to pay him anywhere near what McCaffrey is getting. Then the question becomes, if we do pay him like a McCaffrey, can we up his load to 90% of the snaps? And the answer is probably not, that would only exacerbate the durability concerns.
When it comes to RB value, the prime example is the Titans, Derrick Henry lead the league in rushing in the regular season, lead the league in the post season, and clearly they want to play defense and run the ball and even they wouldn't commit to Henry long term.
Gurley went from an MVP candidate to cut and signing a 1 year prove it deal. There's just a mountain of evidence suggesting RB is a bad investment.
