At some point you have to acknowledge a player's skill but also take into account the prudence of giving that player a buttload of money given their mileage, injury history, age, ease of replacement, etc. All of those things are negatives on Cook. So while I don't relish in trading him or having him move on, I'm simply taking stock of all the factors in this equation. I'd suggest to you that learning from similar situations overwhelmingly call for the opposite of extending him.
I have some simple questions:
Would the Vikings have made the playoffs without Cook last year?
How many truly and I mean truly game changing ability offensive players in the NFL right now?
Is Cook one of them?
