The 5-2 Vikings will face off against the hapless Redskins in a battle where Cousins will face his former team. The Skins roster isn't what it once was, so let's see if they're going to stand a chance today:
Injury Report
* My thoughts *
Boy, this game really shouldn't be competitive. The Redskins are running a skeleton crew on offense, with almost zero talent to speak of. Case Keenum will lead this squad, and while his 1213/9/4 66.3% line looks pretty good, it's mostly generated from garbage time. Keenum at least has the ability to move the football, unlike Haskins or McCoy so far this year. Another old pal, Adrian Peterson, is averaging 3.15 YPC in games not against a practice squad (Dolphins). The offensive line has been bad without stud LT Trent Williams, with Penn struggling, Ereck Flowers not quite as abysmal as he was when he was a tackle, and Morgan Moses declining despite being in his prime. Scherff hasn't lived up to his 5th overall selection in the 2015 draft, but he's pretty good. Former UDFA Chase Roullier is having a quality season despite the offensive chaos.
3rd round rookie Terry McLaurin looks like a keeper, as the guy who topped out as Ohio State's 3rd WR is now the top option here. The rest of the bums include a 35 year old Vernon Davis, a speedy deep threat in Paul Richardson who clearly isn't as good without Russell Wilson, and a poor man's slot receiver in Trey Quinn. Chris Thompson would usually catch a bunch of checkdowns, but he's hurt, so Smallwood and Reynolds will mop up some snaps.
The defense has a few decent players - some teams have found it tough to run on the Allen-Panye-Ioannidis D-line. They're all run-stuffers, which means they won't bring a ton of pressure. They do have Ryan Kerrigan and 1st round rookie Montez Sweat to rush the passer, though. Kerrigan is a great pass rusher, but he may have hit his peak last year, as he's 31 and isn't doing as well in 2019. Montez Sweat is a beast of an athlete but has just 1.5 sacks right now.
The Redskins planned on using Reuben Foster at interior LB before he blew his ACL, so now their primary guys are 5th round rookie Cole Holcomb and journeyman Jon Bostic. Holcomb has graded well in run stopping, but very poorly in coverage. Bostic isn't good at anything, which is why he's on his 5th team in 5 years.
Josh Norman is the big name in the Redskins secondary, but he sucks now. Diggs and Thielen gave him the thrasing of a lifetime back in 2017, and since then he's just been flat-out bad. The real star here is Quinton Dunbar, who's finally healthy and has 3 picks so far, which makes 8 interceptions in 19 career starts. Watch out for this guy! Fabian Moreau is a poor nickel CB. Montae Nicholson has been mediocre for awhile now, as his coverage scores are very low. Landon Collins is a good strong safety, but the $84M they gave him over 6 years was a massive overpay. I suppose they don't have anybody else to pay on this crappy roster, so they can afford him!
Prediction: Vikings 31, Redskins 17
With the Vikings offense rolling and the Redskins manning a bare-bones roster, I see the Skins having a hard time stopping the offense from imposing its will, even without Thielen. The Vikes defense may have some issues, but the Skins will have far more, especially with a loud Minnesota crowd. Note that one of the Skins' TDs is a garbage time score, I don't expect this to be competitive.
Any thoughts?
