Situational Run vs. Pass (1st Down) by ResEng68
Certain teams run a lot because they've been up (E.g. SF, KC) and other teams pass a lot because they're down.
I wanted to pull a clean sampling of what a team's natural tendency is before other game factors take over. To do so, I used sharpfootballstats and applied the below filters:
The results were very interesting.
I wanted to pull a clean sampling of what a team's natural tendency is before other game factors take over. To do so, I used sharpfootballstats and applied the below filters:
- Quarter: 1st or 2nd (to strip out large leads/deficits)
- Down: 1st (it's nearly always 1st and 10, strips out down and distance dependencies for 2nd and 3rd downs)
The results were very interesting.
- Teams like SF, NE and KC have some of the highest pass rates on 1st down. Their high 1st down success rates (44%, 53%, 63%) and high average YPA (8.3 - 11.3) likely keeps them ahead on "down and distance" which may make both their rushing and passing games more effective
- MIN has one of the lowest 1st pass tendencies at 48%. Of the 6 teams which have a higher rush tendency than MIN, 5 of those teams have very poor passing efficiency with YPA and/or Success % well below average. In this context, it makes sense that those 5 teams would have a higher rushing tendency.
- MIN has one of the highest 1st down passing efficiency & YPA values (only exceeded by KC, JAC & TB). Likewise, MIN's 1st down rushing efficiency is below average on both YPC and Success %.
