Hopefully the Vikings will look back at this once his contract his up and learn from this. The problem isn't Kirk himself but the contract he was given. Cousins, at best, is a journeyman QB. Meaning he can probably start on most teams and even help your team win a championship. However the only way he can bring a championship to the team is if his supporting cast is surrounded by elite talent.
Now I understand that in most cases, most teams have no choice but to bring out the brinks truck for veteran QBs who are coming off a hot season or two. But man, it's tough to sign players or resign players that you know can help the team when the team barely has any cap. For contractual reasons, I wish we would've signed Keenum or Teddy. Do I think they are better than Cousins, no. However, I still think both QBs, including Cousins can get you to the super bowl if surrounded by the right people. Keenum and Teddy would have atleast gave us the option to add more pieces and keep some of the pieces here without giving them lowball deals and restructuring their contracts.
Cousins is not in the same tier Brady, Breed, Rodgers. These QBs you can pay big money too because they make the players around them better, not the other way around. The only plus side to this is that we only have 2 more years to deal with this highway robbery of a contract that Cousins have. I don't blame him though, I blame the Vikings for being desperate. They paid Cousins as if he was a MVP caliber QB. And it hurts the team. Luckily we have players who were willing to restructured their deals (Kendricks) and players to take lowball offers (Barr) just to keep to help the team stay intact. Which they shouldn't have to do but they aren't the ones will fully guaranteed contracts either. And with the Kyle Rudolph situation, I think he's more of an asset as a TE than Cousins is as our QB. And the fact that we may have to get rid of him this year or let him walk next year just to get our cap room back together is sad.
I just really hope one day that we have smart front office, not led by Rick Spielman. A office that knows how to evaluate talent and build so we can stop wasting our money and on with journeymen like Cousins, Bradford, Cassell, McNabb, etc etc.
And yes I was on the Cousins hype train last season but he started to show the same traits he did in Washington as the season went on. And just like in Washington, people made excuses for him saying he didn't have this and that. Last season the blamed the o-line. I wonder what will the excuse be this year if we don't make it all the way?
