Teams w/ Winning Records Who Have Missed the Playoffs

Although most teams with a winning record should be able to make the playoffs, this is not always the case. Even though you have a pretty good chance of making it if your record is 9 - 7 or above, a tough division or conference could possibly put you out of it. Although most teams that miss out will usually go 9 - 7, there is a rare chance that a team goes 10 - 6, and even 11 - 5 and still can't get a six seed.

I'm choosing to start in 1978 as that was when the 16 game season was adopted, plus, it helps reduce the workload on me. Anyway, here are the victims.

I will also include teams with an 8-7-1 record since those teams do have more wins than losses. Probably should have put that in the title.

So here are the totals:

6 - Chiefs, Chargers, Patriots, Steelers, Seahawks, Redskins
5 - Broncos, Dolphins, Jets
4 - Cowboys, Packers, Vikings, Giants
3 - Cardinals, Bears, Browns, Lions, Saints, Raiders, Buccaneers, Titans
2 - Ravens, Bills, Texans, Colts, Eagles
1 - Falcons, Bengals, Jaguars, 49ers
0 - Panthers, Rams

Interesting Stats:

-The Panthers and the Rams have never missed the playoffs with a winning record.
-The Chargers and the Seahawks are the teams with the most missed playoff appearances with a 9-7 record (5).
-The steelers are the only team to go 9-6-1 and miss the playoffs cries
-The Redskins are the team with the most missed playoff appearances with a 10 - 6 record (3).
-The Broncos and the Patriots are the only teams to miss the playoffs at 11 - 5.
