2019 QB Draft Class Discussion

Overall I'm less impressed now and would back off from taking him 1st overall however. That Alabama defense is probably the most NFL similar defense Murray has faced and he wasn't looking so good under pressure. He certainly won't be seeing many Baylor level defenses in the NFL.

His mechanics look a little off too. There's something wrong with his release, and it's costing him some velocity. I think his short stature is causing him to throw off his back foot more too rather than stepping into passes, probably to help prevent his passes from being knocked down.

He's not shy about pulling the trigger however and he trusts he receivers to make a play, so I like that. The confidence. Man I hate timid QB's. Talking about you Tedian Pondwater. I'm still more impressed with Murray than I was with Lamar Jackson or Johnny Manziel. I think his NFL future looks more promising than Jackson if he can find the right system because he can actually throw, but yeah I'm not sold on him being 1st overall or even 1st round material. Russell Wilson wasn't even 1st round material, and I don't quite see the same skills as Wilson.

Yeah my Manziel hunch was wrong, but that was pretty much just based on the hype I was seeing, and his size haha. I'm still not sold on him being 1st round material however. I don't know about Mayfield, he didn't seem to generate as much hype last year, so I didn't spend any time looking into it. Mayfield is a little bigger.

Murray definitely plays smart, although in the Bama game he did throw some ill advised passes into a crowd and got lucky with the defenders always dropping them. I like the confidence though. I don't see him running circles around defenses as well as Jackson, but he shouldn't have to if he can throw. Jackson has to because he can't throw worth a lick lol. Seriously he might be the worst throwing QB I've seen in a long time. Reminds me a lot of Joe Webb in fact. Wheels like a WR, but an arm like a RB.

I just don't like this class overall. Kyler Murray is the best of the bunch, but if he was in last year's class he'd probably be the 4th ranked QB.

That's why I simply don't see 4 QBs being selected in the 1st round. If there are, at least 2 of them are making huge mistakes.

I don't know if there will even be 2 QBs selected early. Murray is a lock to go #1 overall either to the Cardinals, or the Raiders if they trade some of their capital to move up.

There's just not enough difference between the rest of them to justify a 1st round pick. For example you have Will Grier #2 on your board, others have him as a 2-4th round pick. And not much separates him from others getting 1st round love like Drew Lock or Daniel Jones.

I don't know, playing two or three years can be a double-edged sword. Yeah, you get to showcase more, but flaws in your game become more apparent. Sometimes, scouts and GMs are just slow on the uptake.

Manziel's sophomore year proved him to be not just reckless, but downright careless with the football, and his attitude and lifestyle choices continued to raise concerns. The Browns didn't heed that lesson.

Jameis Winston's sophomore season proved him to be a human turnover waiting to happen. Plus...life decisions aren't a skill he has in abundance either... if he weren't the #1 overall pick, his time in Tampa would be done.

Neither Murray not Haskins has Manziel's or Winston's dubious past, obviously, but... defenses are non-existent in the Big 12, so Murray's numbers are already inflated. Haskins numbers are impressive too, but c'mon. He threw half his TDs in five games against Oregon State, Rutgers, Tulane, Indiana and Northwestern. Not murderers row. Stats are inflated all over football...every level.

I see the mechanical flaws in Murray too. I see flaws in Lock and Jones and the rest. No QB coming out of college is perfect. I just don't know how much of a guy like Kyler Murray's skills translate to the NFL. Run circles around defenders? Not at this level. If Danielle Hunter gets a hand...a hand on you... you're likely going down. The NFL ain't the Big 12. Murray has a chance... I just don't like his odds.

Haskins put up his better numbers with a clean pocket almost 80% of his snaps. Hardly anyone who's been tested, and when he is pressured, he falls apart.

He also produced a lot of his yards with quick hit passes of 10 yards or less. I don't see him as a long term answer.

It's not a strong class by any means but I don't think it's particularly weak either.
