There are many things to be upset about in the Vikings loss. However patience has worn thin with me on several areas. I have tried pointing out these problem areas to other Vikings fans and have largely been dismissed as "hating" these players, when all I am doing is pointing out their limitations and how they are in need of replacing NEXT season. Of course this season they are the best we can hope for at this time, but we CAN and MUST do better next season if we want to have even a shot at winning this team's first Super Bowl.
K Dan Bailey - When he missed that pivotal field goal against the Patriots, he should have sealed his fate with this team. He is a burned out specimen of a long-gone era. It would be a great shock to see him back on the Vikings next season. The Vikings have stuck with him because of the lack of viable alternatives on the in-season free agent market, but there are plenty of other alternatives going into the draft next year and the 2019 draft class of kickers looks pretty strong. The only extra thing Vikings need on that is a tutor (basically a retired NFL kicker who can teach the subtle tricks of the trade. Morten Andersen, Jason Hanson or Ryan Longwell come to mind) to help walk the rookie through the ups and downs for the first few seasons.
I'll be writing a column about the Vikings kicking situation on purpleptsd.com/ soon.
OT Brian O'Neill - It is common knowledge I am not a fan of O'Neill's. Some have questioned why I "hate" him so much. That is a gross exaggeration. I have nothing against him personally. I am sure he is a good guy as a person. However, he lacks the fire and attack needed for a good offensive lineman. That was evident against Green Bay and against New England Tray Flowers made a fool of him on both sacks where Flowers played a role early in the game. On the first Flowers got around him and helped Butler bring Cousins down. Then, on the second sack in the third quarter, instead of firing off the line to prevent Flowers from stunting around him, O'Neill wimped out by going for a double team on the player Remmers was responsible for. As a result Flowers got Cousins and the Vikings chances of a comeback probably died at that point.
With some players, if you look hard enough, it is obvious they don't have what is necessary to succeed in the NFL. Spergon Wynn, Tarvaris Jackson, T.J. Clemmings, Willie Beavers all showed those signs and look what happened to them. Glaring failures of Vikings history. Brian O'Neill has the same symptoms they manifested. This is why the Vikings need to cut their losses quickly so that the 2nd round pick they wasted on him (he easily would've been available in the third or fourth round if the team had really wanted to give him a shot without wasting high draft capital) will not completely go to waste. At this stage he could easily net a fourth or fifth round pick if the Vikings found a willing trade partner. Then they could turn around and use that pick to move up the draft order and get some QUALITY starting offensive linemen in next year's draft.
Again, I will be writing a column of the Vikings O-Line and what needs to be done next season at purpleptsd.com/
I always give players the benefit of the doubt to start the season. Recently I have simply called for Bailey and O'Neill to get challenges for their jobs and roster spots in 2019 training camp. However Bailey and O'Neill have exhausted my patience with their disastrous performances against New England and Green Bay. Neither should be in training camp with the Vikings in 2019. Thats a definite now.
