With the season halfway over, or near so, let's dive right into the MVP candidates and why they should win MVP and why they shouldn't. I'll breakdown the 5 most popular MVP candidates first and then a bit on other MVP candidates.
This list isn't ordered in any way.
Glossary:
DVOA - Football Outsiders signiture stat that stands for Defense-adjusted Value Over Average (DVOA) system which breaks down every single play and compares a team's performance to the league average based on situation in order to determine value over average. It's very valuable because it accounts for strength of schedule and other factors while many stats do not.
ANY/A - Stands for Adjusted Net Yards per Passing Attempt. The formula for which is: (pass yards + 20(pass TD) - 45(interceptions thrown) - sack yards)/(passing attempts + sacks). Basically ANY/A tries to measure up the good attributes of kept stats for QBs against the poor stats for QBs using weights for all the numbers. ANY/A has one of the highest correlation coefficient's between it and winning percentage which makes it a good stat to truly see how a QB is doing and whether they are contributing to wins.
ALEX - Stands for Air Less EXpected on third downs. It is the average difference between the length of the quarterback's throw and the distance needed for a new set of downs. This basically shows if a QB is throwing short of the sticks on 3rd down and the skill position players are getting the first down or the QB is throwing past the sticks.
IAY - Stands for Average Intended Air Yards. This stat basically boils down to how far the football is thrown in the air, on average, for a QBs throws. Higher IAY means the ball is thrown further down the field on a QBs throws, and lower IAY means the QB attempts shorter throws.
