So sitting here at work, I'm stuck thinking purple (like usual). So with John DeFillipo probably becoming a head coach soon, am I crazy to say that i'd rather have DeFillipo as the head coach moving forward? The league is shifting in more of an offensive driven league. I'm certainly not saying defense isn't a priority, but maybe having an offensive mind as a head coach would put more importance on the offensive line. Kirk and JDF have had some GREAT moments half way through the season. I like Zimmer, maybe he can move him into another role. Maybe somewhere up in the box or maybe move him into DC. But letting a guy like JDF walk is going to be a mistake. If i were Spielman, I'd promote JDF as head coach and Zimmer as DC. That may screw with how the team looks at Zimmer going forward, but I see some serious potential between JDF and Kirk. You look around the league and see McVay/Goff, Pederson/Wentz, Naggy/Trubiksy, Peyton/Brees. I seriosuly think JDF/Cousins can be lethal in the future.

Yes, crazy. Shurmer our OC last year was hot sh*t and he looks like he could be one and done. Which would be cool if he could come back here.

Anyways, Zimmer by most accounts is considered what a top 10 coach in the league? He has a 44-30-1 record here which is pretty good man. I just dont see JDF being an upgrade.

Yeah I don't think JDF is HC material this soon. I don't have the same feeling about him like we all did with Mike Tomlin. That was the only time where it made sense to ditch Brad Kick Ass Offense Childress and make him HC.

I remember not being so happy with Flipper at times this young season, so I'm in the too soon to elevate him camp. I'd rather see Zimmer pulls his head out of his ass on certain things, at least we know he is a lot better than recent MN head coaches on many things. I dont know if Zimmer's going to change much at this stage, but I know even less about Flip.

I keep seeing that the Vikings didn't address the offensive line.

Where did they prioritize the defense over the offense this offseason? What were the Vikings supposed to do at OL? I think it's well-documented that the NFL is severely lacking with OL talent, and yet, Vikings fans continue to suggest that the OL is never addressed. Should we have done more in the draft? Who was available via free agency that was worth grabbing and what current Vikings contract(s) are you willing to eliminate to make that free agency signing possible? We can't keep everyone ... and sign a ton of OL help.

Excited about OL signings? Reiff is good with the unfortunate foot injury this year. I can't name another signing in recent years. Definitely wasn't excited about Tom Compton...

Two weeks before the Vikings reeled in the top free agent signing in Riley Reiff, General Manager Rick Spielman braced for a frenzied market anticipating NFL demand to far outweigh the supply of veteran offensive tackles.

Spielman wasn’t able to close deals to acquire ex-Ravens right tackle Rick Wagner, now with the Lions, or to retain left tackle Matt Kalil, who signed a five-year, $55 million deal in Carolina.

The Vikings’ strong free agency push still landed upgrades at tackle while staying committed to a “pay-as-you-go” business principle with the multi-year contracts for Reiff and right tackle Mike Remmers.

Both five-year deals signed by Reiff and Remmers are breakable after two years (2017 and 2018 seasons), during which most of the duo’s $36.8 million guaranteed will have been paid.

The Vikings opened the bank for Reiff, 28, with $26.3 million in true guarantees. Both of his base salaries are fully guaranteed ($6.2 million and $9.1 million) for the next two seasons along with an $11 million signing bonus, prorated as $2.2 million cap hits across all five years. Should he not live up to the contract, the Vikings can move on from Reiff in 2019 by eating $6.6 million in dead cap space.

However, Reiff can earn more by playing well.

He can be paid $58.75 million over the five-year deal. The contract has a max value of nearly $60 million with $300,000 salary escalators in 2018-2021 for making the Pro Bowl. He also has a $100,000 workout bonus each offseason.

Reiff’s scheduled cap hits for the next five years are $8.5 million, $11.4 million, $11.7 million, $13.2 million and $13.95 million.

Remmers, the 27-year-old right tackle, received a solid deal for his strong development with the Panthers. Only a handful of right tackles have earned more than his $10.5 million in true guarantees on a five-year contract worth up to $30 million.

For the 2017 season, Remmers is fully guaranteed a $1.4 million base salary, a $3 million signing bonus and a $3 million roster bonus, to be paid Wednesday. Rounding out his guaranteed money is next year’s $3.1 million locked into a $3.9 million base salary in 2018.

Remmers has another potential $1 million in earnings tied up in $250,000 salary escalators for making the Pro Bowl in 2018-2021. He also has a $100,000 workout bonus each offseason. The final year of the contract, for the 2021 season, is a Vikings team option.

Remmers’ scheduled cap hits are $5.1 million, $4.6 million, $6.35 million, $6.7 million and $7.25 million.

If needed, the Vikings can feasibly move on from Remmers after one season, but would incur $5.5 million in dead cap space without creating any room. The dead money drops to $1.8 million after two seasons.

The Vikings sit with roughly $26.5 million in salary cap space after both contracts.

Yeah I think it's way too early to consider JDF head coaching material. Lets not forget, he was only the QB coach with Philadelphia last year, which is the position he's held most of his career. He was the Browns OC for 1 year in 2015, and that didn't go so well (30th in points and 25th in yards), not that he had much to work with.

And it's not like he's working with a bunch of scrubs here in Minnesota, unless you're talking about the OL. Otherwise he's got some pretty talented players at QB, WR, and TE. And with our defense not being able to stop anyone, the offense has been forced to stay aggressive and keep scoring points.

Having said all that however, I'm losing faith in Zim being head coach material too. It would be nice if he took a demotion and just coached the defense while we brought in a HC with better game management skills. Zim has proven time and again that he just seems lost when it comes to making crucial decisions. He might be the worse coach in league history when it comes to challenges too. My biggest complaint is he doesn't seem to learn anything as he goes. It's like ok, make a mistake, but then learn from it, but no he keeps making the same mistakes.

His defense is starting to go south too, so now I'm worried he might be like Norv who was slow to evolve with the game, or come up with adjustments. Is it stubbornness or does he just not know how to fix it? Either is a problem. It would be understandable if we had a boat load of injuries, but the defense has been relatively healthy all year, so this makes no sense. His defense is reminding of Leslie Frazier this year. Fraziers defense couldn't cover anyone, but it could at least generate pressure, Zims defense is struggling to do both.

I also forgot about Alex Boone... That signing went well.

Flip hasn't shown much as an offensive coordinator, but he hasn't had a line that was worth a veteran paycheck at either stop.

In any case, i don't see head coach written all over him either.

I didn't like Shurmur's offense - way too predictable. Only great receivers and a QB who could get out of pressure saved him.
