The Vikings are facing the Packers at Lambeau early this year, as the two powerhouses of the NFC North clash for 1st place. Let's see how the Packer roster is doing:
Injury Reports
* My thoughts *
Unlike last week's game, I'm having a hard time getting a read on this one. The Packers have a solid team and very good homefield advantage, and they're coming off a game where they looked putrid in the first half but unbeatable in the second half. Rodgers looked dominant in the second half despite being limited on his foot - even the ferocious Bears pass rush evaporated by a simple no-huddle offense and quick throws from Rodgers.
The Packers offense is basically Rodgers and a much of average players. Bakhtiari is incredibly important to their success and so is a handful of good WRs, but there's no much after that. George Kittle may have gotten open against the Vikings defense, but Jimmy Graham is in his 30s and noticeably slower since a nasty patellar tendon injury with the Seahawks. He was a non-factor against the Bears. Jamaal Williams just isn't that good of a HB and they need Aaron Jones back from suspension.
The Packers defense should definitely be better than previous years, thanks to actually good DBs and new DC Mike Pettine, who should be far superior to Dom Capers. The Packer front 7 is good, but they're missing solid cover LB Jake Ryan. Rookie Oren Burks might get his first career start and should be picked on when he's out there. Meanwhile, the Packers will use veteran Tramon Williams and hopefully-not-a-bust Kevin King to cover the outside WRs. With Josh Jones hurt, Kentrell Brice will be a full time starter with Josh Jackson and Jermaine Whitehead rotating as the 3rd safety (that's what happened in Chicago). 1st round rookie Jaire Alexander is their nickel corner, not dissimilar to Hughes' potential role.
I think the Vikings have the better roster, but on the road against Rodgers, who is most likely playing... The Vikings had some problems against the 49ers and I don't see Rodgers turning over the ball like Garoppolo did. The Vikings pass rush is also far less effective in road games and usually don't get many sacks at Lambeau. Bleh... I don't like picking the Packers, but I'd prefer to be right than be a homer.
Prediction: Packers 27, Vikings 23
