It is sounding like the Bears may move from Soldier Field to Arlington Heights. They put in a bid to buy the Arlington Race Track there. The Bears fan base is divided on whether or not this is a good thing. Some love the nostalgia of Soldier Field by Lake Michigan. Others want a dedicated football venue with more capacity (Soldier Field is the smallest stadium in the NFL).
For many years the Bears played at Wrigley Field. Halas split the gate $$$ and gave 15% for renting Wrigley. Then in the early 70's they moved to Soldier Field.
It's quite a discussion on our messageboard so I thought I'd hop over here and see what you folks think, since you went through a move not too long ago. I'm just curious.
I think it be a good move.
The Bears stadium is pretty outdated. Arlington Heights is a convenient site.
Who you think your new owner is going to be?
Neil Bluhm. He is a multi-billionare who lives in Chicago. He is already a minority owner of the Bulls and White Sox. He has ties to Churchill Downs, which owns the Arlington Park site. Bluhm makes the most sense to me to buy the Bears. The president of the Bears, Ted Phillips, made an announcement on Tuesday: "We are incredibly excited to announce BetRivers and Rivers Casino as our first multiyear exclusive partner in the Sportsbook and Casino categories, We look forward to connecting with our fans in fun and unique ways through these avenues and couldn't be prouder to be building this relationship with a hometown company."
Blum is in fact the majority owner of Churchill Downs Inc., the same folks the Bears are bidding with to buy Arlington Park.
When the Bears president announced the new partnership with, BetRivers and Rivers Casino, he didn't mention that the minority owner and actually the principal operator of the casinos is Neil Bluhm, who is one of the richest men in Chicago.
I'm connecting the dots and figuring this guy is going to be the new owner of the Chicago Bears at some point in the near future - and he can provide the cash to build a good stadium at Arlington Park Racetrack.
The racetrack property that the Bears bid on is a very large tract of 326 acres. Soldier Field is on 17 acres that the City rents to the Bears. With all of that land at Arlington, the Bears could build a state-of-the-art stadium with a retractable roof that could host events besides Bears games. It could be surrounded by dining, shopping, hotels, a casino with an off-track parlor as a nod to Blum and Arlington Park - and also office buildings and even a residential area.
