Diggs Contract Extended: 5-year, $72 Million

I am, but I can't stand when people use advanced stats all by themselves to justify something. If you have to ignore actual production, then you're doing stats wrong.


I agree, and that's my point. Advanced stats are meant to offer context, like to compare or differentiate between 2 guys who might have had similar production. They shouldn't be used alone to try and twist why some guy might be the best. If you see a batter who has a batting average of .500 do you automatically give him a huge contract? I'm guessing you might want to know how many plate appearances he's had.


We won't know until he manages to show up every week and play an entire season like every #1 receiver before him. That's why you said "maybe" xD. There's no doubt he's a good WR when he shows up. Why doesn't he show up every week? Are corners just shutting him down, or what's going on those weeks where he's only targeted 4 times and making only 2 catches? Enquiring minds want to know.


The problem with that argument is Thielen has faced all the same issues and has still managed to out produce Diggs.


Combined with the fact that Diggs tends not to show up sometimes, maybe this is an indication of a bigger issue? Like Randy, maybe Diggs is taking plays off? Maybe he tries harder when the potential reward is greater, like catching a TD? Lets face it, there's not much glory in racking up 10 yard catches between the 20's where Thielen seems to be making a living. Why is Diggs racking up TD's, but not much between the 20's where one would think it'd be easier to reel in catches with all the extra real estate with which to work with?


That's why I brought it up. My point being, I imagine Diggs is right at the minimum. Isn't that important? If a hitter misses 1/3rd of his teams games, but wins the batting title anyway because he managed to barely reach the minimum required plate appearances, is that as big of an accomplishment as someone who manages to win the title while playing all 162 games? It reminds me of those cowards who sit out the final few games of a season to minimize their risk of losing the batting title lol.


So it's subjective? Does each member of this group score every single receiver themselves and then come up with an average, or do they divide up the receivers and each do a set? Because I'm guessing they each have different standards. I've tried to do a similar thing myself, watching games and trying to do my own advanced stats and even my own standards changed the more I did it. I kept having to go back to redo older games with my new standard.

This is also why I hate ESPN's QBR nonsense. It's too subjective and uses data that only they have access to. If I can't see for myself how they arrived at some conclusion, it's impossible for me to trust their results. Especially when you can come up with tons of examples of how their system makes no sense, as people have.


So it's worse than being subjective lol? They're guessing? But yeah, exactly, we don't know what the assignments were on any given play. We don't know if the receiver ran the wrong route, or the QB threw to the wrong spot etc. If Marcus Williams keeps his head up, there is no Minneapolis Miracle.


Whether he got overpaid or not will depend greatly on his production the next few years. If he maintains his 70 catch 800 yard average, then yeah, he'll be overpaid, but if he manages to get his production up there with the top receivers 90 catches 1200 yards 10 TD's, then he'll be a bargain. I mean are we paying for production or potential?


I wouldn't say anyone is killing him lol. There's just some concern and now higher expectations. Now he's gotta show up every Sunday. The Vikings aren't paying him based on what he's produced so far, they're paying him on what they think he's capable of. Which I don't have a problem with because I see the same capability.


I see all the same things, but again this is about how he has to be more consistent with those things now, and do them every Sunday. He needs to justify that contract, and I'm hopeful that he can.


I think Harvin belongs in the discussion, although he had his issues, and health problems. He certainly had the talent.


Me too. I just hope/want that production to improve now so people don't have to merely rely on advanced stats to justify him getting paid. If he starts catching 90 balls and racking up 1200 yards a season, you watch the advanced stat guys transition into using his actual production over digging for obscure stats to justify anything about him. Can't wait!
